End of Daylight-Saving Time Sunday, November 3, 2024 November 3rd marks the end of daylight-saving time, so we will “fall back” an hour over the weekend. At 2:00am local time on Sunday, November 3rd, clocks will go back by one hour (either automatically or manually). While it sounds nice to gain an extra hour of sleep, it can take your body up to a week to adjust to the new times for sleeping, eating, and other various activities. Consider reducing demanding physical and mental tasks as much as possible this week to allow yourself time to adjust. For drivers, the end of daylight-saving time can mean a sudden change in driving conditions during the late afternoon/evening rush. There may be a higher risk for vehicle crashes as drivers adjust from driving home during daylight hours to driving home in darkness. Please be extra cautious while driving. Also bear in mind that not all states and U.S. territories participate in daylight saving time when it begins in the spring every year. Hawaii and Arizona (with the exception of the Navajo Nation) do not observe daylight saving time, and neither do the territories of American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Though, when daylight saving time ends in November, all the states and territories will be back on the same (local) time. With the end of daylight saving, also consider replacing the batteries in your smoke detectors. Because smoke alarms are a critical element of home fire safety, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) supports all efforts to reinforce the importance of working batteries. #HazTek #EndofDaylightSaving #FallBack #TimeChange Credit: CDC, NFPA HazTek is a leading provider of comprehensive safety management services designed to protect workers by enhancing workplace safety. Halloween Safety 2024 Kids love the magic of Halloween, but costume and traffic safety are essential for trick-or-treaters. These tips from the National Safety Council (NSC) can help make a safe and happy holiday for everyone. Costume Safety ● All costumes, wigs and accessories should be fire-resistant ● If children are allowed out after dark, fasten reflective tape to their costumes and bags, and/or give them glow sticks ● Choose nontoxic Halloween makeup over masks, which can obscure vision; always test makeup in a small area first to see if any irritation develops ● Remove all makeup before children go to bed to prevent skin and eye irritation Trick or Treating Safety Children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than on any other day of the year. In addition to dark costumes and an increased volume of young pedestrians, lack of visibility, due to low lighting at night, also plays a factor in these incidents. Keep these tips in mind when your children are out on Halloween night: ● A responsible adult should accompany young children on the neighborhood rounds ● If your older children are going out alone, plan and review an acceptable route together ● Agree on a specific time children that should return home ● Teach your children to never enter a stranger's home or car ● Instruct children to travel only in familiar, well-lit areas and to stick with their friends ● Tell your children not to eat any treats until they return home, and to take care to avoid any food allergies Safety Tips for Motorists The National Safety Council (NSC) offers these additional safety tips for parents – and anyone who plans to be on the road during trick-or-treat hours: ● Watch for children walking on roadways, medians, and curbs ● Enter and exit driveways and alleys carefully ● At twilight and later in the evening, watch for children in dark clothing ● Discourage new, inexperienced drivers from driving on Halloween For more seasonal safety tips, visit: https://lnkd.in/e4aZj7qK Credit to: National Safety Council (NSC) #HalloweenSafety #TrickorTreatingSafety #Safety #HazTek

National School Bus Safety Week October 21-25, 2024 Held during the third full week of October each year, National School Bus Safety Week is an active and evolving public education program and an excellent way for parents, students, teachers, motorists, school bus operators, school administrators, and other interested parties to join forces and address the importance of school bus safety. Designed to promote school bus safety, school districts throughout the country observe School Bus Safety Week. School bus transportation plays a critical role in the education of our nation's students and is the direct link between a neighborhood and the classroom. More than 25 million children ride the yellow bus every school day, and National School Bus Safety Week serves as a reminder for students, parents, teachers, and the community to keep school bus safety in the forefront. Here are tips to keep our children safe at the bus stop. When children are getting ready for school: · Have your children put everything they carry in a backpack or school bag so that they won’t drop things along the way · Encourage them to wear bright, contrasting colors so they will be more easily seen by drivers · Make sure children leave home on time so they can arrive at the bus stop before it is due, ideally at least five minutes early When children are walking to the bus stop: • Walk young children to the bus stop or encourage children to walk in groups. There is safety in numbers; groups are easier for drivers to see • Practice good pedestrian behavior: walk on the sidewalk, and if there is no sidewalk stay out of the street. If you must walk in the street, walk single file, face traffic and stay as close to the edge of the road as you can • Stop and look left, right and then left again if you must cross the street. Do the same thing at driveways and alleys. Exaggerate your head turns and narrate your actions so your child knows you are looking left, right and left When children are at the bus stop: • Have children wait in a location where the driver can see them while driving down the street. Try to avoid waiting in a house or car • Do not let children play in the street. It’s dangerous to play with balls or other toys that could roll into the street • Make sure children never run after or in front of a bus When children are getting on and off the bus: • Warn children that if they drop something getting on and off the bus, they should never pick it up. Instead, they should tell the driver and follow the driver’s instructions • Remind children to look to the right before they step off the bus • If you meet your child at the bus stop after school, wait on the side where the child will be dropped off, not across the street. Children can be so excited to see you after school that they dash across the street and forget the safety rules Credit: NAPT #BusSafety #SchoolBusSafetyWeek #StudentSafety #HazTekSafety
