Easter is this weekend and we know that when it comes to holidays, expectations can be high, so we’ve put together some top tips to have yourself a stress-free break 🐰 Plan ahead If you’re having family or friends visiting over the break, plan ahead so you’re not overwhelmed and stressed out at the last minute. Actually take a break Take some time for yourself to do whatever you want, whether that be taking a long relaxing bath, catching up on your favourite show or walking the dogs. Take yourself away from work mentally Sometimes when you’re not at work, the upcoming workday or outstanding tasks can be lingering in your mind. Avoid thinking about this and use your time off to as not just a physical break from work but a mental break too! Don’t be afraid to say no If you’re not wanting to do something as it makes you feel uncomfortable or you’re not feeling up to it, just say no. Your loved ones will be more than understanding. Remember to take some time for yourself this Easter, however you’re choosing to spend it. The average person spends around a third of their lives at work. One of the reasons we’re so passionate about mental health in the workplace a lot is that people spend a lot of time at work, so it’s important that employees receive support from employers when it comes to their wellbeing. TIME’s recent article is titled ‘People are comfortable discussing mental health at work—just not their own’, which piqued our interest. The research found: 1️⃣ Approximately 74% of workers expressed that they deemed it acceptable to engage in conversations about mental health matters in the workplace. 2️⃣ A total of 77% indicated that they would feel at ease if their coworkers were to talk about such issues. 3️⃣ Approximately 86% believed they could express their true selves in the workplace, and four out of five expressed satisfaction with the emotional support provided by their managers. 4️⃣ A total of 58% expressed that they would be comfortable discussing their mental health with coworkers This suggests that although there is a great improvement in the workplace around how employees feel about their colleagues discussing mental health, more than half of workers still don’t feel comfortable speaking about their own mental health. This is due to stigma, fear of being judged, being viewed as ‘weak’, and not seeing others talk about it. One of the solutions is to address the leadership of an organisation. If leaders are speaking about mental health, it cultivates an open culture where employees would feel more comfortable to address these issues themselves. Moreover, employees should have access to resources which should be spoken about by employers, whether they be internal or external. Pointing employees in the right direction helps them find the support they require. There has always been a lot of stigma around men’s mental health. 🧠 Men are expected to be ‘strong', to ‘man up’ and overlooked in many mental health conversations which is why we feel it’s important to break down this stigma and raise awareness of the importance of men’s mental health. There has been some slight improvement over the year, but we’re not quite there yet! Here are some steps we can all take to progress: ✔️ Involve men in mental health initiatives ✔️ Have open conversations about mental health with your loved ones ✔️ Encourage mental health conversations in workplaces ✔️ Challenge stereotypes that contribute to this stigma ✔️ Be empathetic! If you notice someone’s not quite themselves, check in on them. What are some other ways we can break down the stigma around men’s mental health? Today marks University Mental Health Day 🧠 Mental health affects people of all ages so it’s important to be aware and understand the significance and impact it has on individuals. Research from Student Minds (February 2023) revealed some compelling statistics: 1️⃣ 1 in 4 students have been diagnosed with a mental health issue 2️⃣ 30% of students reported a decline in mental health since starting university 3️⃣ 1 in 4 students were uncertain about where to seek mental health assistance on campus if they needed it These statistics highlight the need to raise awareness and for universities to ensure students have access to the necessary resources. As a Psychotherapy consultancy we’ve hosted workshops for schools and colleges because we recognise the importance of addressing the mental health of students, and it's something we take seriously. You’ve heard of toxic workplaces, but how do you know if you’re heading to work in one? Trust us; it’s better to find out sooner rather than later. Nobody wants to find themselves working in an environment that’s detrimental to their wellbeing. Here’s what Harvard Business Review's recent article has to say about how to find out if a prospective workplace is toxic before you even get there: 1️⃣ A bad interview process This is step one of your journey with them and it’s important to keep an eye out for things that don’t seem right! For example, having to undergo many interview rounds, not hearing from the recruiter for a while then they reach out a few weeks later, being interrupted or dismissed during your interview. 2️⃣ What current employees say and don’t say Watch out for language current employees use and learn to read between the lines. For example, if they say ‘we don’t put much importance on titles’ this could mean they don’t pay employees in line with their role. ‘We expect employees to be fully flexible, and they should stay later to finish up work most days’. This is another red flag which suggests that the workplace does not support a good work-life balance. 3️⃣ Lots of employees seem to be leaving and not joining You can check Glassdoor or Indeed reviews to check reviews left by ex-employees. It’s also good to check their recent job postings. If there are a lot, then you may want to rescind your job application as soon as possible. If staff turnover is high, then there must be a pretty good reason why - so steer clear! If you’ve applied to any jobs recently, keep these tips in mind and look out for those red flags 🚩👀 Let us know which red flags you’ve encountered before 👇 Read the full article here: https://loom.ly/2ye0Fzk
