  • HCA Florida Ocala Hospital proudly hosts and supports a wide array of medical research projects by its physicians, including those residents who are on-site through a partnership with the University of Central Florida's College of Medicine. One such project that we now highlight sought to improve screening rates for diabetes at a rural outpatient clinic in Marion County. The objective for the research was to boost diabetic retinal scans, foot exams, and kidney profiles, while also achieving an overall lower A1c level in the clinic’s diabetic population. The team reviewed services provided to 3,450 diabetic patients at the clinic — fewer than half of whom were up to date with their retinal scans, foot exams, and kidney profiles, or had recorded an HA1c less than 7. According to USPSTF recommendations, diabetic patients require annual screenings including a retinal scan, foot exam, and kidney profile that includes a urine microalbumin/creatinine ratio test and an estimated GFR. Diabetic patients also should have their HA1c checked every three months. Researchers focused on using scheduling cards to establish a system of reminding both clinic staff and patients about the intervals for screenings. What they discovered, however, was that screening rates in diabetic patients improved because of prompts that incorporated the clinic’s in-house lab services and nurses’ visits, instead of opting for the clinic’s usual practice of referring the patients to specialists or ordering separate labs that had the potential to get lost. #HCAOcalaResearch #Diabetes #ChangingLives
