Meet HCA Healthcare’s dedicated, dynamic duo: Sherrie and Terrie Allen. Through their combined 100 years of service, the identical twins have brought love, joy and laughter to patients and colleagues at HCA Midwest Health’s Research Medical Center . In 1974, Sherrie and Terrie embarked on their healthcare career at the Kansas City, Missouri hospital and have made a difference in countless lives. The 50-year veteran patient care technicians (PCTs) recently celebrated their legacy during a retirement celebration at the hospital. “To say Sherrie and Terrie are a true staple of RMC is an understatement,” said Katie Keens, nurse director. “They radiate hard work, dedication, and resilience. Not to mention, they deliver high-quality patient care with the utmost positivity each and every shift they work. You can find them mirroring one another with not only what they wear, but the twin energy they bring every single day.” As patient care technicians, Sherrie and Terrie’s diverse skill sets were essential to patient’s care journeys. Working alongside nurses and other clinicians, patient care technicians assist in both clinical and administrative duties such as transporting patients, gathering essential medical supplies, checking vitals and documenting patient information. “We really think of this place as our second home,” Terrie shared. “A lot of people say that, but we really mean it. I’m not sure it’s really set in yet that we’re leaving our own family.” Sherrie added, “I will miss the patients the most. Together, we truly help patients a lot, and although they are in the hospital, we get big smiles out of them.” Please join us in wishing Sherrie and Terrie a happy retirement and thanking them for their half a century of service. #PositiveImpact #CareLikeFamily

It’s something most everyone has in common. It’s a way we can connect to one another. It’s unifying and familiar. It’s therapeutic. “It”…is music. And, for patients at HCA Healthcare affiliate St. David's HealthCare Children’s Hospital, one incredible nurse is using music to uplift and bring joy. Pediatric Emergency Room Nurse Lummer Dumapat was motivated to combine his passions – music and nursing – to help alleviate children’s fears about hospital environments and undergoing medical procedures. He decided to learn a new skill and now plays the ukulele to comfort his patients. Lummer draws inspiration from his mother, who provided medical care to small villages around their community. "Growing up, I watched [my mom] work in rural communities, providing compassionate care to those in need,” said Lummer, who is originally from the Philippines. “Her commitment left a lasting impression on me, and I’m thrilled to have found a career where I can offer the same kind of care and make a positive impact on people’s lives.” Thank you, Lummer, for your dedication to the care and improvement of human life. #CareLikeFamily #HCANursing

Across HCA Healthcare, our colleagues’ care extends beyond the walls of their hospitals and in to the communities where they live and work. On June 29, Matt Anderson and his daughter, Aspen, were traveling from their home in Brigham City, Utah, to Ogden, Utah when they were involved in a serious motorcycle accident. 19-year-old Aspen, suffered the most severe injuries to her leg and her foot, which was partially amputated in the collision. Traveling the same highway that day was off-duty HCA Healthcare nurse, Carrie Becker, who cares for patients in the emergency room at Ogden Regional Medical Center, a Level II Trauma Center. As soon as she recognized Aspen’s critical state, Carrie immediately stopped and jumped into action to administer life-saving care. Using the scarf of another passerby who had stopped to help, she applied a tourniquet to stop the bleeding, which ultimately helped save Aspen’s foot from amputation. Carrie provided care and comfort to Aspen and her father until first responders arrived on the scene. During her recovery, Aspen continuously expressed her gratitude for Carrie’s care to her family. Six weeks after the accident, Aspen had the opportunity to share this gratitude with Carrie in person when they reunited. Thank you to the HCA Healthcare nurses, like Carrie, who live out our mission: Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life. HCA Healthcare’s East Florida Division proudly announced this week that HCA Healthcare will give $500,000 to Nova Southeastern University (NSU) to help establish a clinical simulation lab in support of their new nurse anesthesiology program. This gift is part of HCA Healthcare’s $10 million pledge over three years to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs). Founded in 1964, NSU is a private, not-for-profit, Hispanic Serving Institution located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. “Investing in education and advanced training is essential for the future of healthcare,” said Charles Gressle, HCA Healthcare’s East Florida Division President. “This important initiative represents a significant step forward in our mission to foster excellence in medical training and to support the next generation of healthcare leaders.” According to the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology, the anesthesiology workforce may experience a shortage of approximately 12,500 providers by 2033. To help combat this, NSU is developing a nurse anesthesiology program. This gift from HCA Healthcare will support the faculty and equipment, including a clinical simulation lab, required to set up nurse anesthesiology training at both the Palm Beach Gardens and Ft. Myers campuses. Annually, HCA Healthcare sees more than 9 million emergency room (ER) visits and ER nurses are often the first people patients see when they are facing a medical emergency. ER nurses are trained to treat everything from mild colds to severe, often life-threatening injuries. They balance skill, quick-thinking and attention to detail with deep levels of compassion. Within the walls of HCA Healthcare’s UCF Lake Nona Hospital, you’ll find Melissa Mattingly, emergency room charge nurse. Recently, emergency medical services (EMS) brought a patient to the Orlando, Florida hospital who was experiencing severe anxiety amid testing that required lab work and a blood draw. As the ER team worked to calm the patient’s nerves, the patient’s sister shared that singing “Everyday” by Buddy Holly was comforting to the patient during stressful situations. Melissa, familiar with the popular ‘50s tune, began singing “Everyday” with the patient’s sister. Soon, EMS and the emergency department manager, Alli Bentubo, joined in. The patient began to relax and allow the team to provide the essential care they needed. “Hearing that song helped her to trust us and we were able to complete the necessary tests and take good care of her,” Melissa shared. “The teamwork in this situation is just part of why I love working here. There’s not a better team around.” Thank you to HCA Healthcare emergency room nurses, like Melissa, for keeping our patients at the heart of everything you do. #CareLikeFamily #HCANursing

During the 2024 Summer Olympics, we witness the incredible resilience, perseverance and courage of athletes from around the globe. At HCA Healthcare, we’re equally inspired by the strength and determination of our patients. Today, we’re spotlighting a special HCA Healthcare patient…who just so happens to be a 1984 Olympian. Tori’s life-long passion for swimming began at 8-years-old and her dream of competing on an international stage came true when she swam the 200-meter backstroke in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, California. Additionally, she was a part of The University of Texas Austin swim team that won the NCAA national championship from 1984-1987. For decades, Tori swam injury-free, but in 2022, she began to experience severe back pain. She was unable to perform basic daily activities –washing dishes, walking up steps or getting out of bed – without pain. Tori was diagnosed with scoliosis, a disorder causing curvature of the spine, and degenerative arthritis in the disks of her back. For specialized spine care, Tori sought treatment at HCA Healthcare affiliate St. David's HealthCare. To preserve Tori’s mobility and help her continue swimming for years to come, Dr. Craig Kuhns, an orthopedic surgeon at HCA Healthcare affilate St. David's Medical Center and Austin Spine, used advanced image guidance technology to perform minimally invasive surgery to straighten Tori’s spine, remove bulging discs and insert spacers to protect her spine from decompressing. She was able to walk the night of her surgery and felt instant relief. Six-months after her life-changing surgery, Tori returned to the pool. Today, Tori continues to pursue her love of swimming. In honor of the 2024 Summer Olympics, Tori and the members of her 1984 Olympic team reunited to celebrate their 40th anniversary and to cheer on Team U.S.A. 2024 during the swimming trials. Thank you to our comprehensive spine care teams across HCA Healthcare who help patients like Tori get back to doing what they love.
