With retirement rates on the rise for #rheumatologists who served in the days before methotrexate, a new generation of #physicians are stepping up – and they come with some surprisingly optimistic takes on the specialty 🌞 Despite an ongoing #workforce shortage, the expansion of #PrivateEquity ownership and rapid technological and medical advances, these fellows and residents are nonetheless confident about the future of rheumatology. In fact, for several newcomers to the specialty, these very “challenges” are being seen instead as “opportunities” for growth and reassurance that their services will remain in high demand. “As a resident, the rheumatologists that I got to work with always seemed to be the doctor’s doctor, serving as the consultant of last resort to help solve a challenging diagnostic dilemma,” Matthew Lempel, MD, a rheumatology fellow at Yale New Haven Hospital, told #Healio. In this month’s Healio Exclusive, we sat down with current residents and fellows – those in the earliest stages of their career – to get a sense of what they think the future of #rheumatology holds for them. ❓ For better or worse, how do you see rheumatology changing in the years ahead? Day Brightener☀️ | I Help People & Organizations Cultivate Their Inner Architecture | My Purpose is Loving People Where They Are | Therapist by Training, Life Enthusiast by Nature | Forever a Student

In 2022, I experienced an act of compassion. I was at a premiere of an important PBS documentary called, Hiding in Plain Sight: Youth Mental Illness in the Washington DC area. I felt a bit out of my element and didn’t know many people at this event, however shortly after arrriving I met the kind gaze of a the stranger that set in motion a series of life-changing events. That stranger was Hansa Bhargava MD and in that moment, she provided such a space of presence, authenticity, connection and compassion…I felt like I belonged despite being in a crowd of people I didn’t know. She genuinely cared about me, what I was doing and who I was as a person…in a sea of people, she “saw me.” Even after the pleasant and meaningful exactness at the premier, we stayed in touch and she has always been there when I have needed a listening ear, some advice or a word of encouragement. Who would have known that that single, compassionate exchange would have resulted in countless transformative memories and moments in my own life. I am excited to share a heartfelt conversation with my friend and mentor Hansa Bhargava MD on the topic of compassion and how it impacts all of us. Please join us for us for a LinkedIn Live Event on Thursday, October 10th at noon ET! We look forward to having you! #compassion #support #leadership #workplace #healthcare #mentalhealth #wellbeing Healio

"Compassion, involves the recognition and clear seeing of suffering. It also involves feelings of kindness for people who are suffering, so that the desire to help – to ameliorate suffering – emerges. Finally, compassion involves recognizing our shared human condition, flawed and fragile as it is.” — Kristin Neff Compassion, connection, and community are more essential today than ever. Whether in our personal lives, our work, or our interactions with others, practicing compassion can strengthen relationships, reduce stress, and help us thrive in ways we might not even realize. It’s not just a soft skill, but a powerful force that can transform how we relate to ourselves and others. One place where compassion is especially critical is in healthcare. Whether we’re patients or caregivers, we’ll all likely find ourselves interacting with healthcare system at some point. In this conversation with Dr. Hansa Bhargava, Chief Clinical Strategy and Innovation Officer at Helio, we’ll explore how practicing compassion within healthcare settings can lead to better relationships, reduced burnout for physicians, and improved outcomes for patients. Attendees will leave with actionable tools to integrate compassion, connection and community into your life, promoting a greater sense of wellbeing. We look forward to you joining us for this open and heartfelt discussion. #compassion #resilience #leadership #healthcare #wellbeing #mentalhealth #wellness #kindness Healio

A recently proposed U.S. Senate bill aims to crack down on social media #influencers and others online who make misleading comments about pharmaceutical drugs. It's S.5040, titled the Protecting Patients from Deceptive Drug Ads Online Act. The bill would allow the FDA to issue warning letters and potential fines to social media influencers and #telehealth companies who promote prescription drugs using false information or withholding important information about labeling, adverse events and more. We talked with Sangeeta Kashyap, MD, Katherine Saunders, MD, DABOM, andd Caroline Apovian, MD, to learn the physician perspective. Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gCCKWazy
