I wanted to dive a little deeper into the discussion of Access and Affordability at Health Connect South since it was discussed in a number of panels. Specifically, I wanted to focus on some of the solutions discussed (grouped into 3 areas). Slow/stop the loss of clinical resources from the field 🛑 Ensure career pathways for healthcare professionals to motivate them to stay (Candice L. Saunders, FACHE ) 🛑 Reduce violence against healthcare workers. Possible solutions included addressing the root cause with behavioral health efforts, more severe legal consequences (proposed law making violence against healthcare workers a federal crime), and on site strategies like armed officers, visitor management, panic buttons, cameras, training, rapid response approaches, and more. (Caylee Noggle /Saunders) Build new capacity 🏗 Invest in educational institutions and residency programs to train more nurses and physicians (Scott Steiner) Note: this may create excess demand for faculty - consider giving nurses the opportunity to teach one day a week (Neil Pruitt, Jr.) 🏗 Expose young students to careers in healthcare to inspire and nurture interest, e.g. through public-private partnerships (Saunders) Process Improvements / Work Elimination 📉 Leverage technology (including AI) to improve efficiency and augment care (Pruitt) 📉 The complexity of today's payment models requires a lot of work - if we could simplify the number of models, we could eliminate significant effort 📉 Stabilize contracts between payers and providers (Robert Bunch 📉 Expand virtual care options (Bunch) 📉 We have dabbled in process improvement for far too long. We have to get waste out of the system. (Leigh Hambly, MD) (In case you're wondering why the topics are combined, it's because if care isn't affordable, it's not accessible.) #hcs2024 TAG Digital Health
