Hypercoagulable states, either inherited or acquired, elevate the risk of deep vein thrombosis or embolic disease. With 80% of clot patients linked to these disorders, their severity necessitates lifelong therapy. Also known as thrombophilia, these conditions heighten the likelihood of clot development due to genetic or acquired factors. Here are key considerations in hypercoagulable state coding: 🔍 Verify Diagnosis: Follow ICD-10-CM criteria; clarify unclear documentation. ❌ Don't Assume: Thrombosis ≠ hypercoagulable state; rely on physician documentation. 🧪 Lab Results: Prolonged prothrombin time ≠ hypercoagulable state. 💉 Anticoagulation Therapy: Bleeding from correct therapy = adverse effect, not complication. 🔬 Primary vs. Secondary: Distinguish between inherited and acquired disorders. 👩⚕️ Physician's Role: Only they can link hypercoagulability with other conditions.
