Understanding your health and what may be abnormal is hard to know. Although some changes in your body are completely normal, they can still be scary when they happen. It’s always important to recognize these changes and know the best time to contact a doctor. Remember to stay informed and proactive about your breast health.

Many different factors, such as age, ethnicity, habits, and physical characteristics, can contribute to a woman developing breast cancer. Your family history can also increase your risk, so it’s important you understand your family’s background. Although some women receive breast cancer by chance, a mutation in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes — which are responsible for preventing the growth of cancer cells — can elevate your chance of getting breast cancer. Even though these mutated genes can be passed down through a family, they are still uncommon. When evaluating your risk of breast cancer, it’s important to examine both your mother and father’s side of the family.

Health Images and NASA share a common goal: capturing the unseen. 👀 In space, NASA can place an x-ray telescope to collect photons — which are particles of electromagnetic energy — from certain areas of the sky. These photons hit the camera pixels of the x-ray, where the pixels then absorb the energy and release multiple electrons. When released, these electrons are stored inside the pixel and converted to an electronic signal. A computer can detect this signal and then turn it into a digital image — much like diagnostic imaging machines.

Ultrasound imaging, also known as sonography, uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the inside of the body. Although ultrasounds are commonly associated with detecting pregnancies, they can do more than check a baby’s health. In fact, ultrasounds can detect infections, cardiovascular issues, tumors and cysts, uterine fibroids, and thyroid conditions.

Scoliosis is more common in adolescents than you might think. Although many don’t experience pain until their 40s, it’s still important to detect and diagnose this condition early on. Through an MRI screening or CT scan, a physician can identify and monitor the abnormal bend of the spine and provide the necessary treatment.

It’s important to detect prostate cancer early, and it’s even more important to know how to do so! Imaging tests — such as MRIs and ultrasounds — play a vital role in diagnosing prostate cancer. Once diagnosed, treatment can then be determined.

Are you experiencing pain, numbness, or tingling in your knee when you walk? If you answered “yes,” you may have an osteochondroma, a common benign tumor, in your knee. Osteochondroma occurs when there is an abnormal overgrowth of cartilage and bone near the growth plate of the bone. In this photo, the overgrowth is highlighted yellow, showing the mass. Although this specific benign tumor has a low chance of malignant transformation, it is still important to have it diagnosed so you can receive the necessary treatment.
