August 26-30 is National Community Health Worker Awareness Week! HealthTeamWorks is a proud member and happy to support the National Association of Community Health Workers in their ongoing efforts to honor and lift up the powerful impacts CHWs make across the country in a broad range of settings.   CHWs have been working in the US for decades and awareness has steadily grown. Yet, confusion and lack of clarity about their roles still crop up. So to kick off this awareness week, we are revisiting the definition as crafted by the American Public Health Association:   CHWs are frontline public health workers who are trusted members of and/or have an unusually close understanding of the community served. This trusting relationship enables CHWs to serve as a link between health/social services and the community they serve, facilitating access to services and improving the quality and cultural competence of service delivery. CHWs also build individual and community capacity by increasing health knowledge and self-sufficiency through a range of activities such as outreach, community education, informal counseling, social support, and advocacy. The AMA has identified 5 critical strategies to improve healthcare in rural areas. With nearly 60 million Americans living in rural communities, it's crucial to tackle issues like provider shortages, access to care, and health equity.
