Local Results Media Healthy Austin was founded just three weeks before my upstairs neighbor flooded my condo in November 2023. Before that I had been searching for something to do as and after I wound down Flor Amor, my wedding floral business. At the time of the flood, I had four weddings left on my calendar. I considered getting a job working for someone else. However, before I started Flor Amor nine years earlier I had talked to a publishing company about starting a magazine. It wasn’t Local Results Media. I don’t remember the company, it was so long ago. My path was different then but the idea was always in the back of my mind. I searched around and found a few companies offering magazine publishing services. Most offer what I think of as stock content, basically running the same stories in all the magazines they publish with a sprinkling of local content and paid advertising. Most seem to have religious or “wholesome” leanings, whatever that means. That isn’t what I wanted for Healthy Austin. I came up with a concept – holistic healthy living, I just needed to find a partner company to help me put it all together. THE HEALTHY AUSTIN CONCEPT I responded to an ad on Indeed for a business opportunity to start a magazine for one of the “wholesome” stock content magazine publishers. I didn’t like what I found in my due diligence research and didn’t move forward with them. But, now I knew what I didn’t want and had a good feel for which companies published the stock content way. Before contacting anyone else I made a list of the content categories I wanted in Healthy Austin. Beyond the obvious recipe or food focus, my vision was holistic: home, family, mind, food, body, and pet with an Austin twist. Simple. In my head, I could see the entire concept for Healthy Austin. I had a clear vision aesthetically and editorially. I started looking at software for magazine publishers to do it all myself. A cost-benefit analysis showed me it would make more sense to outsource the production tasks rather than do it all, learning as I went. I filled out website contact forms and started interviewing for a publishing partner. WE’VE GOT A MATCH https://lnkd.in/eCRVDBNY

Keeping Austin Weird and Going with the Flow The first place I moved into after the flood of my condo was not a place I had chosen. This isn’t the “Austin weird” people think of when they envision the city of Austin. This is closer to the underbelly. The only decision I made was to rent from AirBnB rather than the long-stay hotels referred to me by the weekend Liberty Mutual customer service rep. Being Thanksgiving week, my options for a four-night stay with two cats were limited. That Liberty Mutual rep, although I didn’t follow through with any of the locations she provided, was my lifesaver. She kept me calm and helped me focus on what I could control. She also listened to me cry and talked while we both searched for options for me to move to, possibly that same night although it was almost midnight. I was on the phone with her for about twenty minutes. This was my first breakdown. She started telling me about her dog. I stopped crying to listen, but I cried again as I thanked her before hanging up. Did I mention I was outside in my car this whole time? Yep. The fans were too loud inside. I had filed the claim online the day before after which I got a message that an adjustor would follow up on Monday, November 27, after the holiday. I called to find out my options for immediate temporary housing. The date was November 22nd. BEING WEIRD HAS SOME ADVANTAGES https://lnkd.in/ghnVfcep

The Last Minute AirBnB Switch Part 2 in the Welcome to My Nightmare series After I evacuated my condo when my neighbor flooded it last November I started learning new things. I learned all about subrogation, I read not only the covenants and restrictions for my HOA but also the associated Texas Statutes regarding condo regimes and the management thereof. One of the things I learned is how few AirBnB hosts allow cats. My choices were limited not only by the Thanksgiving holiday. I finally found one, the closest actually, booked it, and continued packing everything I thought I would need for three months. The host contacted me to say someone had smoked in the room I had booked and they wanted to give it a couple of days to air out. She asked me to choose between two other AirBnB rooms they manage. I chose the one with the washer and dryer. THE FIRST OF MANY STRANGE EVENTS https://lnkd.in/gADHFwvB

WELCOME TO MY NIGHTMARE I started Healthy Austin almost a year ago and, if I’m being honest, my life during this time has been anything but healthy. I’ve been living a nightmare. But, while it’s easy to position myself as a victim, I’m choosing to share my story and what I learned instead. What happened to me has happened and will happen to millions of families all over the country. My nightmare isn’t unique, unfortunately. Had I understood the process better in the beginning I think I could have made better decisions that would have reduced the stress load on my body. Most of all I need perspective. I’ve been and am still involved in an insurance claim on my condo. So many strange things happened in the last ten and a half months. I find myself skipping parts of my story because the looks on people’s faces essentially scream out that I was living through a crazy, very less-than-normal, event. At least to me. However, I’ve since met a few people with similar stories leading me to believe it’s not so uncommon after all. MY NIGHTMARE STARTED LAST FALL, ALMOST A FULL YEAR AGO. https://lnkd.in/gH2ZX4yh

WHAT DO THE CITIES OF AUSTIN AND DETROIT, MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY, AND THE ZILKER CHRISTMAS TREE HAVE IN COMMON? Whether you’ve lived in Austin long enough to be “from here” or just arrived, you likely added a new term to your vocabulary – moon tower. It’s only used in Austin because we’re the only ones to still have them. Yes, my friends, it’s another Austin thing. Austin, Texas, is renowned for its vibrant music scene, bustling tech industry, and rich cultural heritage. Amidst these modern attractions, the city’s history is dotted with unique and lesser-known stories, one of the most intriguing being the tale of the Austin moon towers. There’s even an O. Henry connection if you want to delve into that further.

Terpenes: What Are They and Why Everyone is Talking About Them? Are you one of the people seeing a strange word in the top spot of probable keywords as you type the first four letters of your search — terp. Terpenes? Huh? What the heck are they and why are so many people searching for them? In the simplest terms, it’s because the 2018 Farm Bill rescheduled industrial hemp as a standard agricultural product. It all came down to an effort by former Republican Congressman from Ohio and Speaker of the House John Boehner. After retiring from Congress, Boehner became a paid lobbyist promoting medical use and rescheduling of Cannabis. He got it into the bill, they got it passed, and an entire industry emerged. 😊 In Texas, cannabis use is limited to what is legal at the federal level (products with a dry weight of less than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)) along with the medical use of cannabidiol (CBD) for severe epilepsy. The city of Austin has decriminalized recreational use of cannabis. However, it is still illegal to buy or sell mature cannabis with THC content at parity with legal use states. The loophole here is that everything in the cannabis plant works symbiotically to produce the desired recreational or medical effect. Therefore you can still benefit medicinally and recreationally in Texas.
