You know we nail nutrition, but we are also talking about the other metabolic health pillars in sleep, mental health, and movement. Here is June's AMA with Dr. Younglove and it is FULL of goodness. take a listen, she's pretty awesome: Courtney Younglove, M.D., FOMA, FACOG, DABOM Maribeth Orr, D.O., DABFM, DABOM, CF-L1 Maren Ozier #metabolichealth #obesitytreatment #ObesityMedicine #sleep #exercise #huntergatherer #evolution #eatrealfood https://lnkd.in/g2j6JD6m

Taking anti-obesity medications is not a DIY project! Putting pharmaceuticals into the human body always comes with risks. Practicing medicine involves weighing the risks of the various treatment options with the risk of doing nothing. Over and over again. Rinse and repeat. This retrospective study released yesterday tells us that people taking semaglutide have a much higher risk of developing nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) than those who aren't taking it. It doesn't demonstrate or rule out causation (those studies will follow) but it's data. Fairly solid data. These types of reports always make us pause in medicine. We counsel patients and using shared decision-making, weigh the risks and benefits of continuing or starting the medication. This doesn't happen when you get a prescription from an online bot. It doesn't happen when you get the medication from an aesthetician whose primary role is to make clients happy and generate revenue for the med spa. Before you throw a drug into your body, stop and decide if the potential for developing permanent deterioration in your ability to see is worth it. Taking semaglutide as part of a comprehensive lifestyle treatment to put your diabetes into remission, lower your 10-year ASCVD risk, and/or increase your life expectancy may warrant the risk of compromising your vision. Taking that same medication because that extra twenty pounds makes you feel bad about yourself and you want to get back into the clothes you wore before you had kids is a different story. Those are valid reasons to embark on a weight loss journey - but, in that case, the risk of the treatment versus the risk of doing nothing is radically different. My Obesity Medicine colleagues and I are thrilled to have GLP-1 medications in our toolbox. My team at Heartland Weight Loss uses them when appropriate - responsibly and cautiously. But they aren't the only tools we wield. Every month, we get a handful of patients who just want us to write a prescription and don't want to do "all the other stuff" (like monitoring labs, watching body composition, and engaging in a prescriptive nutritional intervention). We refer them out. Thankfully, we are blessed to have a much bigger group of patients who want to treat their excess weight - responsibly and cautiously. And we love taking care of those patients! https://lnkd.in/gXf8bcuV

The advice to "eat things your grandmother could pronounce" is part of a broader philosophy of eating whole, minimally processed foods for better health. Here are some reasons why this approach is recommended: Whole Foods: Foods that your grandmother would recognize and could easily pronounce are typically whole foods. These are foods that are unprocessed or minimally processed, retaining most of their natural nutrients. Nutrient Density: Whole foods are generally more nutrient-dense, providing essential vitamins, minerals, and other beneficial compounds without added sugars, unhealthy fats, or artificial additives. Fewer Additives: Processed foods often contain additives, preservatives, artificial flavors, and colors that might be difficult to pronounce. These substances can have adverse health effects and are generally absent in whole foods. Health Benefits: Diets high in whole foods and low in processed foods are associated with lower risks of chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers. Natural Ingredients: Whole foods are more likely to be natural, with fewer ingredients that are industrially produced or chemically altered. Better Digestion: Whole foods typically contain more fiber, which aids digestion and helps maintain a healthy gut microbiome. Reduced Chemical Exposure: Minimizing processed foods reduces your exposure to potentially harmful chemicals and food additives that can accumulate in the body over time. Simplicity and Tradition: This approach encourages simpler, more traditional eating habits that are closer to how previous generations ate, before the rise of highly processed and convenience foods. Overall, eating foods your grandmother could pronounce encourages a diet that emphasizes natural, wholesome ingredients, which can contribute to better overall health and well-being. #eatrealfood #wholefood #healthylifestyle #obesity #metabolichealth Courtney Younglove, M.D., FOMA, FACOG, DABOM Maribeth Orr, D.O., DABFM, DABOM

🌞 HELLO SUMMER! Let's talk about drinking WATER! 💧 Drinking water is crucial for maintaining metabolic health for several reasons: 1. Hydration and Cellular Function: Water is essential for maintaining cellular homeostasis. Cells rely on water to function correctly, including processes like nutrient transport, waste removal, and chemical reactions. Proper hydration ensures that the body's cells can efficiently perform their metabolic activities. 2. Energy Production: Water is involved in the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of the cell. Without adequate water, cells cannot produce energy efficiently. Water can help control appetite and boost metabolism. Replacing sweetened (real or artificial) drinks with water supports weight loss efforts. 3. Temperature Regulation: Metabolic processes generate heat. Water helps regulate body temperature through sweating and respiration, preventing overheating which can impair metabolic functions. 4. Nutrient Absorption and Digestion: Water is crucial for the digestion and absorption of nutrients. It aids in breaking down food in the stomach and intestines, ensuring that nutrients are effectively absorbed into the bloodstream. 5. Metabolic Waste Removal: Water facilitates the removal of metabolic waste products through urine. Proper hydration ensures that the kidneys function efficiently, filtering out toxins and waste from the blood. 6. Liver Function: The liver plays a significant role in metabolism, including the processing of fats and detoxification. Adequate hydration supports liver function, aiding in efficient metabolic processing. 7. Blood Circulation: Water is a major component of blood, which is essential for transporting nutrients, hormones, and enzymes throughout the body. Efficient blood circulation supports metabolic processes in all body tissues. 8. Joint and Muscle Health: Water is important for lubricating joints and maintaining muscle function. Proper hydration reduces the risk of muscle cramps and joint pain, which can indirectly impact metabolic activities by promoting physical activity and overall fitness. 9. Cognitive Function: Hydration impacts brain function, influencing mood, concentration, and energy levels. Since the brain regulates many metabolic processes, proper hydration supports optimal cognitive function and metabolic control. In summary, drinking water is fundamental to metabolic health because it supports cellular function, energy production, temperature regulation, digestion, waste removal, weight management, liver function, blood circulation, joint and muscle health, and cognitive function. Ensuring adequate hydration is a simple yet vital component of maintaining overall health and well-being. #drinkwater #hydration #metabolichealth #obesitymedicine #obesitytreatment Courtney Younglove, M.D., FOMA, FACOG, DABOM Maribeth Orr, D.O., DABFM, DABOM Maren Ozier
