March of Dimes' "Nowhere to Go: Maternity Care Deserts Across the US" provides the most comprehensive analysis of what maternity care access is like for families across the country. In Texas, 49.6% of counties are maternity care deserts and have no birthing facility and no obstetric provider. We must address the inequities in maternal and infant health. 👟In collaboration with Fit Houston, Super Neighborhoods 48 (Trinity Gardens) and 52 (Kashmere Gardens), and Harris Health System, we organized an epic Walk and Learn! This day also marks a historic event 64 years ago. The first school to be desegregated in Houston was at Betsy Ross Elementary in Kashmere Gardens. Super Neighborhood president, Keith Downey, reminded us during the walk. Today’s success exemplifies collective impact- the fruits of collaboration, advocacy, and innovation when organizations work together. A huge thanks to Alicia Beth Johnston, Heidi M. Hagen M., and Lharissa Jacobs 🎉 Proud to represent the Health Equity Collective

#WALK30 is Fit Houston’s health campaign to encourage people to walk 30 minutes a day for their health. Walking can improve physical health, mental wellbeing, and has the power to convene communities and people in new ways. Today’s Kashmere Gardens Walk & Learn with Northeast Houston Redevelopment Council, Health Equity Collective, and Harris Health was a great way to be physically active while connecting with advocacy for Kashmere Gardens. What impresses me most is the local leadership through Super Neighborhoods #48 and #52, representing Trinity Gardens and Kashmere Gardens. I have watched them working steadily and constantly over the years to advocate for their neighborhood. It’s the kind of work I love and admire - working every day toward a long-term goal - staying steady during the highs and the lows. That is how progress is made. They established a farmers market, built a strong partnership with Harris Health, and secured $43.4 Million for new sidewalks and drainage. Bravo! 🙌🏾👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👟👟👟 Harris Health System Keith Downey Huey German-Wilson Health Equity Collective Fit Houston
