About us
The Hedera Collective is a growing collective of public international law professionals – including lawyers, investigators, analysts, and activists – providing a safe space to discuss common challenges, support each other, and innovate together. We believe that the sustainability and impact of our work can be fortified by the supportive interconnectedness of similarly-situated professionals across all identities and geographic boundaries. Through monthly virtual gatherings, we exchange experiences, support, and ideas to catalyze innovative change. No topics are off limits – from trauma-informed practices, to identity-based inequities, to sharing and discussing works-in-progress. The only rules are respect, confidentiality, and openness.

Thank you to our speakers Clare Robinson and Amy Kapit and participants in our gathering yesterday on ‘Advocating for Academic Freedom’. It was wonderful to learn about Scholars at Risk’s dynamic work, which includes supporting individual scholars at risk, training the next generation of advocates, strengthening monitoring and protection mechanisms, and developing principles to help implement the right to #academicfreedom as a #humanright. A key takeaway from this conversation among diverse professionals is that, no matter our job, we all have a shared responsibility to build understanding, respect, and protection for the freedom to think and express. Thank you to our speakers Natasha Latiff and Sara B. and participants in our gathering this past Sunday on ‘Building and Sustaining Nonprofits’. This was an inspiring and rich discussion with experienced, new, and aspiring founders and directors. Key takeaways for those who were unable to join: ✷𝐁𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐨𝐫𝐠’𝐬 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧: This is a foundation for decision-making and problem-solving. Whether it’s where you register, who you select for your BoD, or making a fundraising strategy, this clarity will enable you to perform, grow, and adapt in line with your mission. ✷𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐲, 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩: For those with co-founders, you should have a good rapport, complementary skills, and trust. Have conversations – good and bad – as things happen. Set ground rules and check in with each other. Remember, like other relationships in your life, it doesn’t have to last forever! ✷𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬: No matter what this looks like for you, be consistent and efficient. Adjust when your body or support system tells you to slow down. Be honest with yourself and your team about what you can handle. The sooner the better! ✷𝐅𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: Even with a good system for financial governance, sustainability assumes capacity, which can constantly fluctuate. This might require you to have an entrepreneurial mindset – enter meetings ready to engage with everyone, without judgment; constantly check in with your funding situation; and have contingency plans. ✷𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧: This way you can fulfill donor obligations without compromising the org’s integrity. ✷𝐍𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤: Value partnerships. Larger coalitions can be impactful, but it’s often in smaller networks where you’ll see the effect of the work on the ground. ☀️☀️☀️ The Collective will be on #summerbreak in July and August. However, please don’t hesitate to reach out for support or to share ideas. See you in September! -The HC Team

*Appreciation post* Happy 2 years of the Hedera Collective!
