Extreme weather events are not going away anytime soon, with hurricanes, floods, and wildfires on the rise and wreaking havoc on the country’s vulnerable energy grid. Over the past two decades, weather-related events caused 80% of U.S. power outages — and their frequency has doubled during the second half of that timespan. Unplanned downtime isn’t just about an inability to turn the lights on. Energy and facility managers must deal with loss of productivity, employee overtime, damaged equipment, spoiled inventory, and more. This challenge underscores the urgent need for resilient energy solutions. Discover how we at Heila are meeting this need. We help companies easily deploy a modern microgrid to strengthen energy resilience, generate independent power, and ensure constant operational uptime in the face of rising extreme weather-related power outages.

2024 has been a whirlwind in the renewable energy industry! 🌍 Every year, RE+ brings together customers and colleagues, showcasing the incredible growth and dynamism of our field. This year, I was particularly struck by the consolidation of international players and the emergence of innovative startups adding immense value to our ecosystem. I’m incredibly enthusiastic about the future of decentralized platforms. With so many players in the market, flexibility is no longer just an advantage—it’s a necessity. Another highlight was witnessing the groundbreaking innovations from startups focused on facilitating the development of new energy projects. Their contributions are truly paving the way for a brighter, more sustainable future. A heartfelt thank you to all the colleagues and customers I had the pleasure of meeting at the event. Your insights and collaboration are invaluable. As we approach the end of the year, the surge in new opportunities for renewable energy infrastructure makes me optimistic about a very sustainable growth trajectory for 2025. 🚀

For manufacturing plant managers, maintaining efficient, reliable, and cost-effective energy systems is a top priority. Critical to this is energy data that can be understood, analyzed, and applied to tackle TOU pricing, enable rapid demand response, minimize peak demand charges, and enhance power system quality. Heila iQ was created to meet this need. Recognized as a top product in energy management, the sophisticated tool empowers plant managers to make informed energy decisions with ease and confidence. If you're tasked with delivering cost savings and resilience for your organization, view our latest case study where we explore how Heila iQ is driving energy optimization for Rehlko and Kohler Co. The diversity of "Deep Tech" innovations to fight climate change showcased at NY Climate Week was inspiring. Deep Tech solutions must overcome substantial scientific and engineering risks before having a meaningful impact. That means they require lots of time and money to develop and there's a real risk that they won't work out as we hope. BUT we need these new technologies to fully address climate change. The solution isn't as simple as scaling low-risk tech like wind and solar. We had a spirited panel discussion during Capgemini's event last Wednesday to help understand this. We discussed the critical need for Deep Tech to fight climate change and we had the perfect team for it. From left to right in the photo, we had: Colin Campbell from Cambridge Consultants where he supports clients in a range of industries developing novel technologies and products. Trudie Wang from Heila Technologies, with a software/hardware solution to make our grid more resilient, efficient, and renewables-ready by enabling and optimizing microgrids. Lisa Hansmann from Engine Ventures, a firm that invests in deep tech innovations. Lisa also brings a valuable perspective from a career at the intersection of law and economic policy including time at The White House helping to craft bills including the IRA. Kate Kelly from Avalanche Energy, where her team is developing small fusion reactors to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors like maritime. It doesn't get much more "Deep Tech" than that. Katherine Mizrahi Rodriguez from Osmoses developing novel filters that make gas separations more efficient. This may sound specific but gas separation accounts for 15% of global emissions! Thank you all for an awesome discussion.

The wildfire season is clearly upon us, prompting evacuations and power outages across western states. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection noted that the state’s 2024 wildfire activity is a staggering 2,816% higher than 2023 and has burned 29 times the amount of acreage, leaving tens of thousands of customers without power. Meanwhile, in Colorado, more than 55,000 electricity customers lost power in August when potential wildfire conditions forced a local utility to preemptively de-energize power lines — the first time any Colorado utility has had to take such drastic, though successful, measures. These numbers underscore the need for resilient energy solutions. Discover how Heila Technologies helped Stone Edge Farm in Sonoma, California, deploy a modern microgrid for more energy resilience, independent power, and constant operational uptime in the face of rising wildfire-related power outages.
