Freight Fraud Awareness Day: A Movement to Protect the Transportation Industry 🚛 On Tuesday, October 15, 2024, the first inaugural Freight Fraud Awareness Day was recognized, marking a significant milestone in our industry. A coalition of business leaders joined forces to raise awareness about this critical issue in the transportation industry. This group includes representatives from industry leaders such as Verified Carrier, Truckstop, GenLogs, FreightValidate, and Freight Bites. The aim is to raise awareness about this issue by uniting the logistics community and policymakers to tackle a persistent threat to the freight transportation sector. Freight transportation fraud has become a persistent challenge in recent years. Industry leaders who are pioneering this day estimate that schemes like double brokering and cargo theft cost the sector between $500 million and $700 million annually. Steering Through the Wreckage of Hurricane Helene Hurricane Helene has wreaked havoc across Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, and Tennessee, making it the deadliest mainland hurricane since Katrina's landfall in 2005. As a third-party logistics company, we’ve seen the impact of Hurricane Helene and the challenges our carriers face while delivering essential supplies to affected regions. This past weekend, one of our carriers shared photos showing their journey through the Carolinas, where they encountered road closures and other obstacles. Their commitment to delivering these essential supplies to those in need is commendable. Being part of these relief efforts during such a critical time means a great deal to us at Helix. Navigating the Challenges of Hurricane Helene  Hurricane Helene has had a devastating impact on many, resulting in tragic loss of life, millions without power, and significant infrastructure damage. This damage includes the destruction of Interstate 40, a major route that serves as the busiest connection between North Carolina and Tennessee, driven by nearly 26,000 drivers a day.   For truck drivers delivering essential supplies to areas and people in need, conditions are dire. Widespread flooding, road closures, fallen trees, mudslides, and debris have made these efforts more challenging than ever.  In a recent article from Trucking Dive, Ben Greenberg, President and CEO of the North Carolina Trucking Association, discussed the urgent efforts underway to address the storm’s effects. Highlighting the critical issue of water availability, Greenberg stated it’s “going to be weeks, if not longer, for there to be an appropriate recovery to water supply. So, we’re trying to get as much water into western North Carolina as we can.”  Further jeopardizing our already fragile supply chain are the recent port closures due to the ILA strike. Carrier Spotlight: October 🚚 In the world of logistics, strong partnerships are key to success! For the month of October, we’re excited to highlight Phillip Morris from M Transport of NC Inc. as our Carrier of the Month! Based in North Carolina, Phillip Morris finds himself busy with a FEMA load across the state for the next two weeks. After a busy few days responding to Hurricane Helene with his crucial contributions to our Helix team, we had the opportunity to chat with Phillip. His efforts have been instrumental in delivering hurricane relief loads, and we’re excited to share more about him and his business! Since 2020, Phillip Morris has been the owner-operator of his company, utilizing a 26ft box truck to serve his clients. The logistics industry can often be unreliable and unpredictable, and Phillip has certainly faced his share of challenges. However, in the wake of Hurricane Helene, he’s found himself in high demand, with a 14-day load keeping him busy. This FEMA-supported effort has him on standby to deliver essential supplies and goods to help alleviate the impact of the hurricane. With a background as a former military member and electrician, Phillip is no stranger to dedication and hard work. He is a prime example of the kind of carrier we value at Helix Logistics.
