The US Hemp Authority (USHA), the hemp industry’s initiative to provide high standards, best practices, and self-regulation for hemp and hemp products, is proud to announce the launch of the nation’s first Adult Hemp Product certification program. USHA is expanding on its five-year program certificating non-intoxicating hemp and CBD products with a new program to provide self-regulation on the most rapidly growing segment of the hemp industry: adult products such delta-9-THC and delta-8-THC. With no federal regulations on the books, and no consistent national oversight to ensure quality control, transparent labeling and meaningful age restrictions, USHA is stepping up to give consumers and retailers confidence about product safety and give policymakers assurances that the industry is taking responsibility and holding itself to the highest standards. The USHA adult certification will for the first time allow consumers and policymakers to distinguish between quality manufacturers and the bad actors in the industry. Chris Fontes, president of the U.S. Hemp Authority, shares his excitement on the launch of the program: "With great pride, today we launch the Adult Use Certification Program. Hemp products intended for adults have become prevalent, and with a lack of federal oversight, companies now have the opportunity to self-regulate, attain certification, and demonstrate to their customers, their points of distribution, and their competitors that they are acting in good faith and making quality products. We intend to ensure the hemp industry regulates itself to increase safety and stability, and to demonstrate to legislators and regulators that the industry is made primarily of good actors trying to bring quality products to consumers." We are also proud to announce the hiring of a new certifying body to provide independent, third-party auditing, ensuring the integrity of the program. Ceres Certifications International (CCI) has been in business since 2001 and has been conducting GFSI level audits since 2011. Additionally, we conduct non-GFSI inspection audits such as PrimusStandard, PFA, International Fresh Produce Harmonized Audit, OPMA, EuroCert, CONFICERT and US Hemp Authority.   Brand owners and product manufacturers are encouraged to sign up for the new USHA adult program. Ohio may be poised to ban almost all hemp products currently sold in the state. Based on rumblings we've heard from our lobbyist in Columbus, when the Ohio Senate returns after the November election, it is expected to take action on legislation that would ban intoxicating hemp products. Even worse, based on language previously supported by the Senate, the effort could wipe out almost all of the industry’s products in the state, including many non-intoxicating hemp products. As you may recall, last December, the Ohio Senate inserted language in H.B. 86 that essentially banned any hemp products with more than .5 mg/serving or more than 2 mg/package of any THC.  These extreme limits would have banned almost all hemp products regardless of their intoxicating nature. The Roundtable quickly jumped in to oppose that language and the Ohio House of Representatives did not take final action on the proposal. Throughout this year, we have continued to express support for regulations, including testing, labeling and other similar requirements, as well as age restrictions on the sale of intoxicating products. Despite our efforts to contribute to a real solution that keeps hemp products on the shelf, especially for adult consumers, we may be back at square one. Senate President Matt Huffman recently called for renewed action on this issue, saying that he wants to see something done with intoxicating hemp products before session ends in December. He told Gongwer News Service in Ohio that he wants to ban non-regulated THC products, like Delta-8 and related synthetics. “These products have no regulation, are being sold in gas stations and 7-Elevens and there’s no age limits,” he said. Given that Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has already expressed support for a ban on similar products, the threat is real and urgent! If you live in Ohio, we need you to contact your state legislators today and tell them that banning hemp products isn’t a workable solution. Find out how with the link below!

This afternoon, the U.S. Hemp Roundtable, and several California hemp farmers and businesses, petitioned California courts for a temporary restraining order (TRO) preventing the enforcement of Governor Gavin Newsom’s hemp-killing "emergency” regulations. You can review the Roundtable’s complaint and TRO application in the comments below. The hearing for the TRO has been scheduled for 9:30 AM PDT/12:30 AM EDT, Thursday, October 10th.  Nolan Jackson, the Roundtable’s regulatory counsel, will be arguing the motion on behalf of the plaintiffs.   Jonathan Miller, the Roundtable’s General Counsel stated: “We are hopeful that the Court will temporarily block – and then ultimately, permanently enjoin – Governor Newsom’s misguided efforts to devastate hemp farmers, business and product consumers in California. It’s high time that the Governor abandon this punitive effort and sit down with all stakeholders to appropriately address his stated mission: to develop a robust regulatory regime that promotes health and safety and keeps hemp products out of the hands of minors.” We need your help. This is going to be a long and costly battle. Please consider a contribution of any size to the California Hemp Litigation Fund at the link below. Together we can block this existential threat to hemp farmers, businesses and consumers.

Big news from Bloomberg News: House Ag Chair smacks down the anti-#hemp lobby for misleading Members of Congress concerning the Mary Miller Amendment (or as Senator Ron Wyden calls it, the "Mary Miller Mess"): “My observation was there are members who felt that the Agriculture Committee was taken advantage of,” House Agriculture Chair GT Thompson (R-Pa.) said in an interview, “Depending on how this bill goes, how the Senate feels about it—yeah, it is one of the more controversial parts, so I don’t know how this ends up in the final farm bill.” https://lnkd.in/gb5iCPbd

This afternoon, at a congressional briefing hosted by the US Hemp Roundtable, Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) announced introduction of the Cannabinoid Safety and Regulation Act. This critical legislation would protect hemp farmers, small businesses, and product consumers by establishing a new federal regulatory framework for the provision of hemp products. The approach includes the following four pillars: restrict youth access, increase quality control standards, standardize labeling, and standardize packaging. The bill boasts the endorsement of the consensus of the hemp industry, with more than two dozen non-profit organizations pledging their support. Hemp Supporters are encouraged to use our handy portal to send an email to their U.S. Senators, urging them to co-sponsor the Cannabinoid Safety and Regulation Act. Together, we can ensure that hemp products are robustly regulated, not prohibited.
