When he was 17, Simon Shagga Saffigna took time off from surfing to earn some cash picking fruit. He used the earnings to go in on thirds on a Sony HandiCam with a couple friends. You’d think a grom growing up in Coolangatta, an idyllic beach community on Australia’s Gold Coast, would have bought a new board or maybe a wetsuit—but Shagga had reached a point in life where it was time for “big boy decisions.” “Surfing was everything to me,” says Shagga, “but I wasn’t talented enough and I wasn’t delusional. I knew I wanted to be in surfing, but I wasn’t going to get paid.” Today, Shagga has been making films for 27 years and is “almost a historian.”With that revelation in mind, Shagga has spent the last four years backing up and digitizing his footage. His goal is to assemble a history of surfing through his eyes. Read the rest of Shagga’s story by Denis Faye, MS here: https://lnkd.in/gRZv-EBs Photo by Dave Sparkes #MeetACreative #TellGreatStories

“Authenticity and realism are impossible to fake. That’s the magic of Patagonia. The creative decisions are always made in the context of trying to do the right thing. The environmental side of Patagonia is real. The founders are radical environmentalists. Yvon Chouinard once said of the company’s voice, ‘it will offend, and it will inspire.’ It’s very human. And that’s what we strive to do with our storytelling.” - Alex Lowther As creative director at Patagonia, Alex has produced award-winning feature-length documentaries, mid-length and short films; social content, and all of Patagonia’s product and sales-related campaign spots and internal video. Along the way, he’s learned a lot about storytelling and life - and shares some of those lessons on the Hence Journal. Read them, in his own words, as told to Gordy Megroz, here: https://lnkd.in/dzRzc7Vq #TellGreatStories #CreativeBusiness

Meet Cody Townsend. Cody grew up in Santa Cruz, California, and ski raced at the resort now known as Palisades Tahoe. In his 20s, he got into big-mountain freeride competitions and later appeared in dozens of ski movies and on the pages of every ski magazine, easily making him one of the most well-known and adored skiers in America. His 2,000-foot straightline of an Alaskan couloir known as The Crack landed him on network news back in 2014, when it was called the most insane ski line in history. In 2019, Townsend announced his intentions to ski every line in the book, “Fifty Classic Ski Descents of North America,” a feat nobody has done before. The multi-year project became his magnum opus. Read the rest of Cody’s story penned by Megan Michelson via the Hence Journal, here: https://lnkd.in/gG3X6hjf Images by Bjarne SalenWeston Shirey & The Fifty Project #CreativeBusiness #TellGreatStories

“Boarded Up,” directed by Mathieu Alexander began as a look into the New Orleans skate culture. The story led Mathieu and his team to an overlooked slab of concrete under an interstate highway. What was once a no man’s land of concrete columns and rubbish is now a famed skatepark built out by the community over the years with quarter pipes and halfpipes, ramps, ledges, and rails. This is Parisite DIY. The park is maintained and supported by non-profit Transitional Spaces that builds safe and accessible skate parks for young adults. Watch the full short film via the link below, and go behind the scenes of the production with Julie Brown Davis's In The Field article on the Hence Journal. Watch now: https://lnkd.in/gHNPHgGN

The name “Mattias Fredriksson” is known globally as one of the top adventure ski and mountain biking photographers. That’s because when you see a shot from Mattias Fredriksson, you know it. If Mattias was a painter you would categorize him as someone from the Romantic school with a tendency toward the Sublime. Wild mountains are not pastoral, they are foreboding, especially when a skier or a mountain biker is standing on a peak as the sun is setting and clouds gather head. You don’t look at such images passively. You get pulled into the scene. With a Mattias shot, victory or cataclysm awaits. That’s the essence of a big day in the mountains. He’s one of the top five mountain shooters ever. And he has 500 magazine covers worldwide to back up that claim—a claim he would never make. But what most people don’t know about Mattias is that his creative outlets transcend photography.
