The National Museum of Norway has been nominated for the Nordic Lighting Design Award 2024. Showcasing the country's largest collection of art, architecture, and design, the museum's lighting arrangement is one of balance and timelessness. Visual comfort, readability, and luminance have been key elements in the design process. Flexible solutions were crucial in addressing the diverse and evolving needs of users, ensuring adaptability well into the future. "The lighting at the National Museum not only protects the art but also enhances the visitor experience. Our use of artificial fanlight mimics daylight, eliminating harsh shadows. The marble-covered light hall has already become a landmark in Oslo." -Katerine Hjelmeseth, Senior Light Designer. In the evenings, the outdoor light hall softly illuminates the surroundings, creating an especially tranquil atmosphere on dark winter nights. In collaboration with Kultur- og likestillingsdepartementet - Norge, Statsbygg, Kleihues + Schuwerk, Cadi & Kaels studio, Ramboll, and Caverion. Images by Tomasz Majewski.

Located in the heartlands of Singapore, Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park is one of Singapore’s most popular parks. As part of a much-needed park upgrade and efforts to enhance the capacity of the 2.7 km-long Kallang Channel, a concrete drain along the park’s edge, work was simultaneously carried out to transform the utilitarian channel into a naturalized river, creating new spaces for the community to enjoy. Complementing the revitalization of the river, the project used a range of soil bio-engineering techniques, strategically employed for the first time in a tropical region. From the strategic choice of vegetation and other natural elements to the civil-engineering solutions, these continuously stabilize the contoured riverbanks, preventing erosion, managing stormwater runoff, and preventing flooding and droughts. Based on a 2017-2019 study from the National University of Singapore on two mature plots in the park, the introduction of the naturalized river has seen the park’s biodiversity increase by 33% - totaling a striking 197 species of animals including 59 bird species and 22 species of dragonflies. These, alongside 66 different species of wildflowers! One of the park's highlights is a family of smooth-coated otters, first seen in 2015 after being thought extinct in Singapore. With a focus on biodiversity and protecting key freshwater resources, the revitalized park has become a cherished space for all. Find all the details about the project here https://hnglr.sn/4erRNix. A dynamic social hub is serving the community of Copenhagen and beyond. The transformation of Betty Nansen’s Plads is now open, connecting what was once a disconnected urban space. By blending work, volunteering, and social interaction, the design aims to set an example of long-term social and economic sustainability. The space features a café, kitchen, and community center. The café is led by Kaffe Karma a socio-economic organization who integrate socially disadvantaged and mentally vulnerable individuals into the work force. The kitchen is run by JunkFood CPH, an NGO led by a Michelin-starred chef, which prepares nutritious, carefully crafted meals for those experiencing homelessness in and around Copenhagen. With help from the updated facility, the organization can now produce 5000 meals daily. With just under 6000 individuals experiencing homelessness across Denmark, this is enough to feed nearly the entire homeless population of the country. The remaining multi-purpose space hosts an array of activities and initiatives, which reflect the diversity of its users. Education, employment, culture, and leisure blend together, creating a more interconnected environment for everyone involved. In collaboration with KAB and Frederiksberg Kommune. The project was supported by the A.P. Møller and Chastine Mc-Kinney Møller Foundation. Images by Rune Bundgaard.

Copenhagen's summer is wrapping up, but that's not stopping its residents from enjoying the last sunny days of the season. Havnebryggen Sirius, situated along the city’s canal, brings a playful urban landscape to the inner harbor. No matter whether it's summer or winter, those passing through can be found basking in the sun or enjoying the park. Having designed and delivered the first three residential developments in the now-bustling Islands Brygge South area, we are proud to have developed Havnebryggen Sirius as an addition to the masterplan. The two buildings include 116 housing units and welcomed the first residents in 2022. The balconies along the façade offer views of the water and feature built-in planter boxes with an irrigation system utilizing collected rainwater. The buildings optimize daylight and visibility, showcasing flora and vertical gardens resilient to Copenhagen's climate. In collaboration with PensionDanmark and Nordstern. Images by Zoey Kroening.

𝘌𝘹𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘯𝘦𝘸𝘴 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘤𝘰-𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵 - 𝘋𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯 𝘢𝘴 𝘞𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳! 💧 🌊   This summer at Henning Larsen and Ramboll, we've been deeply immersed in the realm of water, exploring what it truly means to design as water. We work with water for a reason. Water inspires us, it connects us, it gives us purpose - 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫! As part of this ongoing innovation project, we've developed a unique 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐱𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐞 aimed at activating our empathy with water and our whole-systems thinking as one.   By engaging our senses, we believe we can gain fresh perspectives and a deeper understanding of water and its interactions with the ecosystems around it. This approach will offer unique insights and tools to approach projects differently - designing more intuitively and with greater respect for all aspects of water.    This five-step journey stimulates both the sensory and cognitive parts of our minds, and includes: - Landing as water - a short storytelling to unite us all by the water, - Sensing into water - a sensory exercise to feel, see, hear, smell and taste water, - Becoming water - An imaginary journey to understand ourselves as bodies of water in the planetary ecosystem surrounding us, - Emerging as water - a submerging into water, physically and mentally, - Reflecting as water, a silent reflection of insights, feelings, and intentions as water.   The amazing project team, Trine Stausgaard Munk, Marina Ramos, Anne Lørup Arildsen, is actively testing those steps, and we’re so excited to share our progress. When the time is right, we look forward to inviting our community to join us on this regenerative journey, as we discover new ways of thinking, designing, and interacting with water in our projects. 💙

Central to our urban plan for the town of Klaksvík is a new landmark that celebrates the Faroese sports heritage. The Klaksvík Row Club, nominated for the Nordic Council Environment Prize 2024, draws both locals and visitors alike with its welcoming views of the surrounding landscapes. Situated within a picturesque fjord that shields from the Atlantic's harsh winds and grants views to neighboring islands, Klaksvík is the second-largest town in the Faroe Islands and home to 5,000 residents. Rowing, the national sport of the Faroe Islands, is a significant part of Faroese culture, with athletes dedicating considerable time and effort to year-round training and competitions against neighboring towns. Traditionally crafted with a single axe and tracing their origins back to Viking times, these boats are included in the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The clubhouse serves as a public venue hosting a variety of events and exhibitions, and a notable tourist attraction, proudly showcasing the traditional craftsmanship of Faroese boat-making. Thank you to Nordisk Råd og Nordisk Ministerråd for the nomination. Find all the details about the project here https://hnglr.sn/4aKROMr. Images by Nic Lehoux.

Our new report on the climate impact of white indoor paint is now available for download! Without environmental product declarations available, it is a struggle to grasp paint’s climate impact. Over the past year, we have been on a journey to unpack the environmental effects of paint products. Our report is now available to download. Together with Forbrugerrådet Tænk, Teknologisk Institut and Aalborg Universitet, we deep-dived into the material’s contents to better understand its effect on our health and planet. The research project, 'Undesired Substances in Paint,' includes a comprehensive review of the environmental and human health impacts of 30 indoor white paints available on the Danish market (20 for walls and 10 for wood or metal trim). Supplementary reports by Henning Larsen and Aalborg University evaluate the climate impact and the plastic content of the products. “Mineral based paints achieve a higher level of coverage with fewer layers, which is in part why their global warming potential impacts are less than paints with plastic binders,” says Head of Materials, Martha Lewis, who has authored the report together with Sille Willum Foltinger and Josephine Uggerhøj Kornerup. Access the full report in either Danish and English: https://hnglr.sn/4dwKpBD And check out the article from Forbrugerrådet Tænk here: https://hnglr.sn/4cLXqpR
