Internationally recognized for his groundbreaking work as a gynecologic oncologist, today Dr. Adnan Munkarah, MD leads a life far different from what he once envisioned in medical school as our chief clinical officer and president of care delivery system. Driven by his passion for delivering the best possible care and patient experience, he told Newsweek that he finds striking parallels between his executive leadership role and his roots in patient care. "I've learned over time that we need to say things multiple ways," Dr. Munkarah shared. "I learned it before when talking to patients because I was dealing with cancer, and when somebody has cancer the first time, it's not an easy diagnosis to give them. You need to kind of take a deep breath and repeat it, talk about it... have both empathy and patience. It's not any different when you are dealing with hard [executive] decisions. Continue to listen and communicate, but again, be consistent, be transparent and be courageous." Read the full article from Newsweek.

Congratulations to our chief innovation officer & Henry Ford Innovations VP Lisa Prasad on being named a 2024 Modern Healthcare Diversity Leader in Healthcare! Through her commitment to promoting equity and inclusion, Lisa has raised funds to support diversity for a fellowship that educates employees about healthcare innovation, as well as our high school mentorship program for students at 15 Detroit high schools. Additionally, her work organizing last year's Advancing Health Equity Summit brought tools to improve cancer treatment for underserved populations.

Recent funding from the state and the creation of our new hospital-based doula program - the first of its kind in the country - is successfully expanding access to doulas for women of color. “We have the highest maternal and infant mortality rates, 2 - 3x higher,” explained Dr. D’ Angela Pitts, MD, FACOG, our maternal infant health equity director. “Having a doula — someone who looks like you that can advocate for you when you're not being heard — can decrease those adverse outcomes.”
