Congratulations to our neurosurgery team at our Detroit hospital for becoming the first in the U.S. to use augmented reality (AR) during a complex spinal surgery! This cutting-edge technology already seen in gaming, shopping and education is now enhancing precision and improving patient outcomes in the operating room. During the procedure led by Dr. Muwaffak M. Abdulhak, the OnPoint Surgical, Inc. System superimposed virtual guides and implants onto the surgeon’s view, streamlining screw placement with incredible accuracy and minimal tissue disruption. “Using the new technology has made the surgery easier, safer and more successful because it is so accurate," said Dr. Abdulhak. The 66-year-old patient, suffering from leg pain due to previous failed surgeries was discharged just 5 days after the operation. Looking ahead, there are plans to expand this technology for patients with spinal arthritis, tumors, and trauma. Pediatric patients will especially benefit from significantly reduced radiation exposure during procedures such as fluoroscopy and CT scans. "This technology empowers our surgeons to take on the most complex cases and gives patients a better chance of returning to productive lives," said Dr. Ellen Air, chair of our Neurosurgery Department.

Empowering the future of medicine, one student at a time! 💙 This weekend, in partnership with The Perry Initiative, we hosted 66 female high school and medical students to learn more about a career in orthopedics from our orthopedic surgeons and residents. As women make up less than 8% of practice orthopedic surgeons, the goal of the program is to expose young female students to orthopedics early with hands-on experience doing mock surgeries, casting wrists and suturing.
