We’re proud to share that once again all our hospitals are recipients of The American Heart Association's Get With The Guidelines-Stroke awards for their dedication to providing stroke patients with the most appropriate treatment based on nationally recognized, research-based guidelines. This commitment ultimately leads to more lives saved and reduced disability. Our Detroit, Jackson, Macomb and West Bloomfield hospitals received the Gold Plus quality achievement award and our Wyandotte hospital received the Silver Plus award. Congratulations to our team on this outstanding recognition! In addition: 🏆 Our Jackson, Macomb and West Bloomfield hospitals received the American Heart Association's Target: Stroke Elite Honor Roll award. And our Detroit hospital received the Target: Stroke Honor Roll award for meeting specific criteria that shorten the time between an eligible patient's arrival and treatment with clot-dissolving thrombolytic medication. 🏆 All of our hospitals received the American Heart Association's Target: Type 2 Honor Roll award, which ensures that patients with Type 2 diabetes receive the most current, evidence-based care when hospitalized due to a stroke.

As more physicians are giving up the clinic for the corner office, our neurosurgeon-turned-CEO Dr. Steven Kalkanis MD told Newsweek the medical and business worlds can be reconciled. Dr. Kalkanis shared that his experiences as a physician have shaped his understanding of forthcoming delivery models like value-based care. "For physicians, I think we do have a special experience when you go through training and especially residency, and you take calls in the middle of the night, and you see people at their most vulnerable," said Dr. Kalkanis. "That somehow gets ingrained into our own professional DNA and helps inform leadership decisions when it comes to putting yourself in that moment." Read the full article from Newsweek.

"I was determined to get him home safely. Even if that meant having him wait until I got off of work and driving him around until he pointed out his home." When a vulnerable patient who didn’t know his address was discharged from our Detroit hospital, our emergency department patient advocate Amber Ali-Reed went above and beyond to ensure he got home. With help from one of our Spanish interpreters, Amber learned the patient had moved here 4 days prior and likely was staying in southwest Detroit. The patient felt he could start walking and find his way home - but with no cell phone and no idea how to get around Detroit, Amber was concerned. To help narrow down where he lived, Amber called over a nurse who lived in that area and spoke Spanish. Using landmarks, they figured out his address using Google Street View and Amber was able to order the patient a cab back to his residence. Amber spent nearly 4 hours helping this patient - all while assisting other patients. She never once considered giving up on him. Before he got in the cab to return home, he typed into her phone translator “God bless you.” Thank you, Amber! If you’re interested in a career on our team, email IAmHenryTalent@hfhs.org.

Our cancer researcher Dr. Stephen Brown and his colleagues have patented a unique way to 'seek and destroy' cancer cells, targeting tumors with radiation treatment using metals. “Metal absorbs high-energy radiation effectively through a process called pair-production," explains Dr. Brown. "By attaching the metal to an organic compound, the potential to localize the metal to targets on the cancer cell becomes possible.” With this new method, cancer cells are damaged by the radiation but normal tissue is left unaffected. Their goal is to improve the standard treatments of several cancers while increasing overall patient safety.

"I felt I had more than a nurse, but a good friend for my time there. I felt like I was a whole human person with them, not a list of medical issues!" Our DAISY award honorees emulate what it means to be an exceptional nurse - gaining their patients' trust, treating them with respect and providing comfort during what's often a difficult time in their lives. Thank you to our team members who work hard each day, earning the eternal gratitude of the patients and families they care for. Congratulations to Cameron Breshamer, Priscilla Keziah, Brandy Zabinski, Caitlin Cooney, Jessica Hull, Amber Coe and Cassandra Boehmer! 🌼 If you’re interested in a career on our nursing team, email IAmHenryTalent@hfhs.org.

From integrating care teams to leveraging data-driven decisions, value-based care is revolutionizing healthcare. “We entered into value-based care about 20 years ago. At that time, it stemmed from our belief that we need to provide better coordination of care rather than having a transactional relationship with the patients,” explained Dr. Adnan Munkarah, our chief clinical officer & president of care delivery system. “We have learned over time that in order to provide value-based care, you need to have the right team. You want to make sure that you are providing the access, and you need to engage patients.” A key element of our approach has been working with nonphysician providers, medical assistants, care managers and other health professionals to help establish as many access points as possible for care. Read more from the American Medical Association on how we're applying value-based care in practical and effective manners.
