She was born and raised in New Delhi by a single mother who believed that good girls studied hard, kept long hair, and found nice Indian husbands through penpalship. This billboard by taxpayersforpeace.org reads: “Israel kills 3 school buses of kids daily. Our taxes fund it.” The inhumanity is unfathomable. According to Amnesty International, over the last several decades, Israel has maintained an “institutionalized and prolonged racist oppression of millions of people”. It has been condemned more than 45 times by the United Nations Human Rights Council for seizing Palestinian land, unlawful killings, forcible transfer, and the denial of basic rights to self determination. And presently, in 2024, Israel is currently indiscriminately bombing the civilian population of Gaza — 50% of whom are children. Hospitals, refugee sites, ambulances, medical workers, ALL OF IT. How ANYONE can attempt to justify this is BEYOND us. We are living in an upside down world where truth is silenced and oppression rewarded. Community is the enemy of fascism. All we have is us. “In a landmark announcement, the U.S. surgeon general, Dr. Vivek Murthy, declared firearm violence a public health crisis in the nation. It marks the first time the government’s leading public health body has honed in on guns.” — NBC News, June 25 As detailed in a 40-page advisory, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services proposes increased federal investment in firearm violence research, community-based intervention, and education programs, as well as “encouraging policymakers” to pass laws on safe storage, implement universal background checks, ban assault weapons, and more. Now, YES, we are glad Dr. Murthy agrees gun violence is a national crisis. We are pleased the government’s leading public health body is focusing on guns. And we are delighted for any and all innovation to prevent guns, the number one killer of American children. Yet sadly, focusing on *reforming* broken systems and “encouraging” dichotomized and useless policymakers to enact their humanity means it is extremely likely that nothing will change and guns will continue to be the number one killer of children and teens. Pray tell, where has encouraging policymakers got us with guns up until now? Where has encouraging policymakers got us with climate? Where has encouraging policymakers got us with preventing genocide? Absolutely fucking nowhere. You cannot repair a shattered crystal vase. We MUST stop being limited by *reforming* broken systems and instead innovate on creating new ones. To construct a new vase. To reimagine. To reconnect. To rebuild. So, Dr. Murthy, thanks for this landmark announcement — but also, we need you to do so much more. #AbolitionLiberationSolidarity
