Josie Shardlow, the Director of Operations and Engagement, Regulatory Services at City of Minneapolis, shows what it looks like to be courageous and loving. Through her career in community engagement, she has encountered a lot of “angry or passionate people.” Instead of running in the other direction in fear, she sees the value of these people because they are so interested in their community. Her take is that she always wants to find these passionate (and sometimes angry) folks and work with them. Not only is it more strategic to approach and collaborate with these passionate people, but it also leads to the best outcome on a project or issue. #herocrats #governmentemployees #agentofchange #publicengagement #changemakers #justice #equity #collaboration #courage

Aisha Elmquist is the Director of the Minnesota Olmstead Implementation Office. She convenes leaders across state agencies to implement the Olmstead Plan, which helps fulfill the right of people with disabilities to live full, integrated lives in their communities. We spoke to Aisha about why connecting with communities and colleagues is so important for driving equitable change. #herocrats #governmentemployees #olmsteaddecision #disabilityrights #communityengagement #stategovernment

Optimize the relationships between the parts of the system, not the parts themselves. We often think that if every team improved its performance, the overall system would work better. And it probably would, to a degree. But optimizing each part of the system is not enough because they would remain disconnected. Herocrats add unique value by building the connections between the system's different parts: between individuals, divisions, and with communities. These connections lead to equitable systems change, not just working harder/more/better. #herocrats #governmentemployees #agentofchange #publicengagement #changemakers #justice #equity

In the book, Emergent Strategy: Shaping Change, Changing Worlds, Adrienne Maree Brown reflects, "What we practice at the small scale sets the patterns for the whole system. . . . Transform yourself to transform the world. This doesn’t mean to get lost in the self but rather to see our own lives and work and relationships as a front line, a first place we can practice justice, liberation, and alignment with each other and the planet." Herocrats can't advance systems change without also improving the relationship with themselves and their local communities. #herocrats #governmentemployees #agentofchange #publicengagement #changemakers #justice #equity

Along with a group of state leaders, I have been participating in the Senior Leadership Institute affording us time to talk at length about influence. As part of that conversation, we’ve been reading Herocrats and considering how leaders use connection✨, courage🦁, and creativity🎨 to make an impact. I think courage can be a challenging characteristic to harness, so when I saw it broken down even further, I found myself deep in thought. Which type of courage comes easiest to you and which is the hardest to conjure up?

As Allison Bell wrote in the Herocrats book, "Relationships embolden herocrats, and relationships protect herocrats when they’re bold. Knowing people who are directly impacted gives herocrats motivation. It keeps them grounded, compassionate, and accountable." How have your relationships helped you to succeed in your work? ⬇ #herocrats #governmentemployees #agentofchange #publicengagement #changemakers #justice #equity

Connection means being in relationship with yourself and others. It is one of the three herocrats superpowers. Herocrats thrive and help others to thrive when they have a network of relationships to lean on and contribute to. Alyssa Greene views her role in government as “someone who can connect others—whether that’s people in need of services to programs and resources ... or people who want to collaborate with others.” Learn more from Alyssa's story: https://lnkd.in/gqUnEdNW #herocrats #governmentemployees #agentofchange #publicengagement #changemakers #justice #equity #connection
