July is Disability Pride Month, which was officially established in 2015 during the 25th anniversary of the ADA. As we close out Disability Pride Month, we want to acknowledge that to improve the workplace, we must practice inclusivity. Recognizing and welcoming all disabilities is an important stepping stone to overall visibility, integration, and acceptance into the non-disabled world. A mission Highlight is dedicated to reflecting daily. Curious about the color stripes across the left corner? It represents the Disability Pride Flag, which was initially designed in 2019 by Ann Magill to represent all disabilities. In 2021, it was revised with input from the community and is now in the public domain. The flag consists of different colored stripes, each with its own meaning: - Red represents physical disabilities - Gold symbolizes neurodiversity - White signifies invisible disabilities and those that have not yet been diagnosed - Blue represents emotional and psychiatric disabilities, such as mental illness, anxiety, and depression - Green is for sensory disabilities, including deafness, blindness, lack of smell, lack of taste, and audio processing disorder The faded black background represents mourning and rage for victims of violence and abuse. The diagonal band cuts across the walls and barriers that separate people with disabilities from normal society, also symbolizing light and creativity piercing through the darkness. We want to recognize Christina McCormick, our HR Administrative Assistant. An Army Veteran with 10 years of service under her belt, Chris has been working at Highlight for 4 years now. She has been instrumental in all of our Highlightcares work and our internal communications. We asked Chris what was something that she learned in the service that she brings to her day-to-day life she said: "One of the biggest things I took with me when I left the military is a sense of service to a larger mission and the importance of teamwork. Knowing the value of working together and pitching in to help the team accomplish our mission is something I use in some way every day." This past Saturday, we held our company picnic in Carderock Park in MD. Members from various Contracts joined our Headquarters team for an amazing day in the great outdoors. We are always grateful for these incredible opportunities to come together with our team.
