Practice Makes Practice Ever felt held back by perfectionism, people-pleasing, or that relentless drive to “do more”? Here’s a funny thought: on LinkedIn, you can deck out your profile with every credential imaginable—your MS, JD, PhD, PMP, and a whole alphabet of acronyms after your name. When I see that, I’m always a little curious… who is all of that for? And what does it mean if that’s the first thing you want people to know about you? Do you ever feel that way? Just one more thing—another degree, certification, job, accolade—because free time makes you squirmy? When did being still become unproductive? Why are we so afraid not to produce? You’re not alone. Our (work) culture is filled with messages that tell us our worth is tied to our output. “More” means you’re worth more. More education, more experience… but here’s the thing: your outputs don’t define your worth. You’re not GPT; you’re a human being - worthy even when you mess up the prompt (especially then). You have nothing to prove to anyone. In my new beta program, Dreamer’s Canvas, we’re diving into this exact conversation. We’ll confront the need to do more head-on and start creating a life that’s true to you, free from the external pressures of what you “should” be doing. Dreamer’s Canvas is a 4-session, one-on-one coaching program where we’ll: Imagine Your Most Liberated Life—a vision free from urgency and external validation. Reclaim Your Value and Purpose—because confidence and alignment start with you. Map Out Your Path to Success—with goals that reflect your strengths and aspirations. I’m opening the beta for just 8 participants at a special rate—because I don’t grind anymore and I want this to be intentional. 😉 Enrollment is open through November 30. If this resonates, let’s talk. Link in the comments to learn more. Chat soon, Marie (just imagine my whole CV here 😛)

Marie founded High Tides in 2016 after getting pushed out of the corporate space. Starting the business was the easy part. Running it without the toxicity she was groomed in, was the challenge. Coaching helped. A lot.
“Perfect” Wasn’t Enough In 2016, after building my company’s first L&D department, earning a perfect 5/5 review, and being praised by leadership, I faced a harsh reality. Under a new manager—who happened to be a white woman—my performance was suddenly questioned. Typos were “unacceptable.” Meetings were “ministerial.” And within six weeks, my team was disbanded, and I had no decision-making authority. I left with trauma, yes. But I also left with the lesson that even “perfect” isn’t enough in certain environments. And the more I coached BIPOC women in the years that followed, the more I realized: my experience wasn’t unique. Many of us have faced toxic cultures that push perfectionism, urgency, intellect-over-emotion, and hustle as virtues. When we leave those environments, though, that toxicity often sticks. It’s a residue I call the “detox period,” and without that conscious detox, we end up recreating those dynamics in new roles, sometimes even in businesses we build ourselves. (Corporate) America is full of spaces like this. Heck you could be the top in your field, the second in command to the highest office, have a breakthrough fundraising campaign, and still . . . not get the job. Some spaces are toxic by design. And it’s soooo familiar, old, and unimaginative. That’s why I’m inviting folks into something new: Dreamer’s Canvas. It’s a 4-session 1:1 coaching program (in beta) for those ready to shed limiting beliefs like perfectionism and grind culture and embrace a more liberated vision for 2025. Rooted in a Black feminist lens, Dreamer’s Canvas is about reclaiming our dreams and moving forward with intention and clarity. If this resonates, or if you know someone who might connect with this journey, I’d love to hear from you. Book a complimentary 30-minute laser call, and let’s talk about stepping into the DreamSpace. If you are looking for some serious detox level kind of coaching, my doors are open. It would be an honor to bear witness to your clearing. Message me, drop a comment, share with a friend. Proactive Safety Measures for Transgender Individuals in Uncertain Times 🛡️ With the upcoming administration change in the US, it’s essential to think proactively about safety, rights, and community support. Trans people especially may face increased scrutiny or barriers under the incoming regime. I recently came across an insightful article on Substack that outlines practical steps transgender individuals can take to protect their rights, secure important documents, and find community resources before the inauguration. This guidance can empower individuals to stay informed and prepared in a time of uncertainty. As a community committed to fostering inclusivity, it’s our role to support and uplift marginalized voices. Now, more than ever, we must advocate for spaces where everyone can feel safe and respected. Take a moment to read, reflect, and consider sharing with those who may benefit. Let’s stand together in solidarity. 🤝🏳️⚧️ #Inclusivity #TransRights #LeadershipInAction #inclusiveleadership https://lnkd.in/dWKeHgvr

As we enter Native American Heritage Month, I reflect on the history and contributions of Indigenous communities, especially here in North Carolina, where we are honored to share space with the state’s eight recognized tribes. In Raleigh, we stand on lands originally belonging to the Tuscarora Nation. May this month inspire us to respect, learn, and uplift the voices of Indigenous communities. I am still learning about the lands where I now call home. How are you honoring the space you occupy? #HeritageMonth #IndigenousHistory #Respect https://lnkd.in/g-w_9qJY

Our recent Career Advocacy session for our client EAB, brought together an incredible group of women dedicated to owning their stories and amplifying their voices in the workplace. Here’s what some participants had to say about their experience: 💬 “It was a mix of therapy and mindfulness practices that make sense in the corporate world. Fun and thought provoking!” 💬 “Dedicated, inclusive time to think about yourself, your journey, and how it plays into the future.” 💬 “A very reflective exercise with tangible outcomes of how to talk about our accomplishments.” I’m so proud of the work we did together.💪✨ #WomenInBusiness #CareerAdvocacy #LeadershipDevelopment #MindfulLeadership #InclusiveLeadership

It’s true, at High Tides we hate the word workshop and hope your team leaves feeling like they had “an experience.” Learning happens in the experiencing. New book excerpt is up - for those following me on this journey. The latest excerpt is from a chapter on what is missing in the modern workplace ( a lot) "Before I had any opinions about work and life and the liminal space in between, I watched my parents work. I watched them do work. One of the fondest memories I have of my Dad is of him coming to my fourth grade classes to explain the basics of computing. Was it career day? No. Just my Dad volunteering to teach young people about stuff he was passionate about. I was mortified." https://lnkd.in/eqqEsxJb I would love if you would take a read and let me know what you think. What do you think is different about today's workplace versus the one your elders experienced?

In my latest blog, I dive into why culture is the ultimate differentiator for any organization. While we often focus on selling to clients and external stakeholders, we sometimes forget that the real product we offer our team members is the experience of work. From crafting a strong team ethos to understanding the beliefs and values that drive high performance, building an intentional culture is the key to retention, engagement, and long-term success. Curious about how to make your team culture your biggest selling point?
