  • Hillis-Carnes Attends Carnegie Mellon University’s Fall 2024 STEM Career Fair Last Wednesday, September 11th, Regional Manager Jerome Guy (left) and Branch Manager of our Pittsburgh office, Justin Zelekovitz (right), attended Carnegie Mellon University’s Fall 2024 STEM Career Fair. All students across campus pursuing technical studies and roles were welcomed. This inclusivity ensures a broad representation of interests and disciplines. The STEM Career Fair launches the recruiting season by providing students with an early opportunity to engage with companies. Numerous networking events and information sessions complement the fair and offer additional avenues for forging valuable connections. Facilitated by the Career and Professional Development Center and the Society of Women Engineers, a student-led organization, the STEM Career Fair receives steadfast support from the College of Engineering and Carnegie Mellon University, emphasizing its commitment to fostering professional development and industry connections for all students.   • Hillis-Carnes is proud to announce the promotion of Robbie Brown to the position of Branch Manager of our Frederick, Maryland office. Robbie has been with the firm for almost 20 years and started as an Engineering Technician. Over the years, he has continued to grow in the company working as a Project Manager overseeing numerous projects across the Mid-Atlantic region.   • On June 27th, Harrisburg Branch Manager Matt Decker, PE, and Regional Business Development Manager Aaron Roach participated in SMPS’ A/E/C Golfing “Fore” Business Golf Tournament. The event was held at Out Door Country Club in York, Pennsylvania, where A/E/C Professionals came together to network while supporting the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development. As a nationally recognized pediatric facility, the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development offers family-centered education and therapy programs for infants, children, and adolescents with disabilities, developmental delays, and acquired injuries. Its goal-oriented approach maximizes each child’s ability to function independently within the community. Hillis-Carnes was a “Birdie Sponsor” this year, and all donations went towards this amazing organization and cause.   • Hillis-Carnes was contracted by Kinsley Construction to provide roller compacted concrete mix design review, sampling, and testing during the Trial Mix Design Development phase of the Lake Williams Dam project, located in York, Pennsylvania. This project was in the middle of a multi-phased, multi-year plan to repair its existing dam face, spillway, bridge, and utilities. On Monday, June 3, 2024, the Lake Williams Dam was officially rededicated to the employees of ‘The York Water Company’ during a 'wetting down' ceremony, which served as a ribbon cutting.   • Hillis-Carnes Welcomes Sr. Project Manager for Facilities/Envelope Services. Chad Barninger has joined our Annapolis Junction, Maryland, corporate headquarters as a Sr. Project Manager for Facilities/Envelope Services. He will be working alongside Assistant VP/Facilities-Envelope Services Group Manager Khal El-Jallad and will be traveling to various offices to be accessible to the clients and envelope projects we are working on. Chad brings with him over 12 years of diverse experience in the construction industry and holds an Associate’s degree from Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering. Chad’s technical experience includes overseeing and implementing fenestration product testing plans, performing building envelope diagnostic investigations, forensic leak detection, and overall building envelope quality control. Chad has managed and performed quality control of envelope construction on numerous projects across the Mid-Atlantic, reviewing all envelope related specifications, drawings, submittals, and shop drawings for Divisions 7,8,9, and others and providing site visit reports to document and track issues observed. In addition, Chad provides training to Applicators in the proper installation methods during construction to ensure consistent standard operating procedures and quality requirements are being met. Chad will play a key role in the growth and expansion of Hillis-Carnes’ Facilities/Envelope capabilities, both technically and geographically. We are very excited to have him on board and look forward to the expertise he will be contributing to Hillis-Carnes!

After providing consulting engineering services within the New Jersey area for over 18 years, the firm established a local office to be more accessible to its public and private sector clients and projects in this area.   • Hillis-Carnes provided Geotechnical Engineering and Subsurface Exploration for a 50-ft. tall flagpole at the existing Paver Plaza, located in Grasonville, Maryland. The flagpole is typically 60 inches in diameter and extends 5.5 ft below grade. Hillis-Carnes was asked to provide a geotechnical evaluation of the required foundation for the project based on the soil conditions encountered at the site.
