Conventional thinking would suggest leaders should stay abreast of what their direct competitors are doing to gain insight into their strategy. Justin McLeod, CEO of the dating app Hinge, doesn’t subscribe to this theory, stating in an interview with Fortune that he doesn’t use other dating apps for research purposes and hasn’t been on a competitor’s platform since 2016. “I don't really care what [others are] doing…because then you start narrowing your focus, and you start comparing yourself to your competitors,” he says.
