In the world of hiring, like an apple tree, we all want to partake of the fruit of the tree, but sometimes we forget that there is a process required in order to produce the fruit. Feeding an organizational Hiring Tree effectively is the key to success! It all starts with the roots, which then feeds the trunk, providing the right nutrients to the branches to produce the fruit we seek (qualified applicants!) Many employers I work with think the fruit is just there for the taking, without realizing that there is a process and methodology that will continue to produce fruit during both droughts and bumper crop seasons. Hiring works the same way. Sometimes there are more applicants than are needed, creating the need to filter through the leaves properly to find the right fruit to pick. Sometimes it feels like there are not enough applicants to choose from and the tree seems a bit barren. In the analogy of the Hiring Tree, an organization can develop their own hiring tree that will produce the fruit of new hires regardless of the season or external factors happening around them. The analogy starts the reader off with the roots, helping to develop a solid foundation. This foundation will then properly feed nutrients to the trunk where an employer can develop a sound strategy and follow specific practices that will then feed the branches in such a way that the fruit of the tree begins to blossom, thus producing the type of applicants to make their business successful. In researching the concept of what I call the manager's journey, one of the biggest frustrations managers have expressed to me is being misinformed. Many genuinely care about certain aspects of the hiring process when they realize the impact it can have on their ability to attract the right person for the role. The onboarding process is the first opportunity to emphasize both confidence and conviction in the decision to hire the applicant in the first place. The hiring manager felt strongly that this candidate would be the one to aid in fulfilling the needs of the role. Make sure that when the new employee starts, the onboarding process emphasizes this decision as a positive one.
