I recently completed my summer internship as the Environmental Education and Community Outreach Intern for the Providence Urban Wildlife Partnership. This opportunity was made possible through collaboration with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS),Hispanic Access Foundation, and the Rhode Island National Wildlife Refuge Complexes. I want to express my deepest gratitude to everyone I had the privilege to work with and learn from. It was truly fantastic to immerse myself in the world of wildlife refuges and understand the significance of protecting and preserving these habitats. Each day brought something new to learn, which allowed me to grow both personally and professionally. Programs like Vamos a Pescar and the environmental education initiatives at federal meal sites were particular highlights. Vamos a Pescar is part of an educational program by the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation’s George H.W. Bush Education Fund. This program aims to involve Hispanic families in fishing and conservation efforts for future generations. The federal meal sites are conducted for children in Providence and are an effort to reduce food insecurity, particularly in underserved communities by ensuring there is access to healthy meals when school is not in session. My role in this was to bridge the gap between environmental education and language in order for families to be connected with nature and understand the significance of wildlife conversation. It was an honor to work alongside my supervisor Alison Schwartz in making environmental education accessible and facilitating the Vamos a Pescar events. Witnessing families learn to fish and clam for the first time was incredibly inspiring. It was rewarding to see how translating for families helped them connect more deeply with the environment. Moreover, interacting with children at the federal meal sites, hearing their thoughts on wildlife, and observing their enthusiasm for taking care of the planet was truly heartwarming. This internship has given me a deeper appreciation for wildlife conservation and will always be a cherished experience. Out-of-control wildfires have displaced hundreds of thousands of Californians. And Latino communities, among other groups, are often affected the most by the health and economic impacts of catastrophic wildfires. Prescribed fires are planned in strategic locations at specific times of the year and are expertly managed to be cooler and less intense than wildfires.
