  • What an unforgettable day! On October 12, the President's Marine Corps Band wowed the audience at Kauffman, and we had the honor of welcoming Assistant Director 1st Lt. Jose Taranzo to Hickman Mills Middle School! 1st Lt. Taranzo spent the day with our talented band students, sharing his wisdom, offering guidance, and making music come alive. From inspiring talks to hands-on practice, it was a day our students will never forget! #MusicInspires #MarineBand #HMC1Relentless

  • In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, HMC-1 is excited to spotlight one of our amazing alums, Janeth López! Born in Los Angeles and raised in the Hickman Mills community, Janeth graduated from Ruskin High School and became the first in her family to earn a college degree! Janeth's journey wasn't always easy – some even doubted her potential due to her Ruskin roots. But she shattered those expectations with hard work and perseverance, graduating from UMKC and pursuing a career in engineering! Her story is a powerful reminder of how determination and community support make dreams come true. We're so proud of Janeth and all she's achieved – and we can't wait to see what she does next! • 🏅 Big thanks to DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation for their incredible $8,000 grant to Hickman Mills South Middle School for new P.E. equipment! They visited last week to present the grant. Through their Sports Matter program, which has committed over $100 million to youth sports, this grant will help us build exciting new sports programs for our middle school students. We’re so grateful for your support in empowering our students and helping them stay active! 💪🏽

  • We had an incredible turnout for the Real-World Learning Center Grand Opening on September 30! Thanks to U.S. Congressman Emanuel Cleaver for joining us and sharing valuable insights on the job market and workforce development. It was a packed house, and we’re so grateful to all of our elected officials, partners, community members, and staff for making this historic celebration one to remember. Together, we’re shaping a bright future for our students! Visit https://bit.ly/3ZQqLwn to see more photos from the celebration.

  • 🎉 Congratulations to Dr. Marjorie A. Williams on her well-deserved induction into the UMKC Starr Women’s Hall of Fame! Known to many as Dr. Marj, she has dedicated nearly 40 years to serving schools, children, university scholars, and teachers. In 2000, she became the first African-American superintendent in Hickman Mills’ 100-year history, breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations. 👏 Read more: https://bit.ly/4gEgVUr

  • Both Compass Elementary and Truman Elementary have been named Gold Ribbon Schools! This prestigious recognition highlights their dedication to academic excellence and innovative learning. We announced this special honor, surprising both schools with the Hickman Mills Middle School drumline. Last night, we celebrated both schools at the HMC-1 School Board Meeting. Our students, staff, and community partners work hard to make a difference every day, and it shows. A full story to come; until then, enjoy a few photos from yesterday!
