Improvement in burnout statistics is certainly encouraging. However, employers need to continue to work toward creating a healthy balance for providers. As a provider, I know firsthand the drive to take care of your community above oneself. It is this drive that can potentially contribute to burnout. Creating an environment conducive to wellbeing can be a win win for both the provider and employer. The fix is not all about the compensation, but can be about the model. One look at MGMA’s Production Plotter illustrates the various ways APPs are utilized. Consider the workload demands (ie. hours worked, weekend call, night call, admin services) on APPs beyond just the total wRVUs. This will better capture their work effort and signal to employers when an APP is working beyond a sustainable capacity. I know that survey companies like SullivanCotter , American Medical Group Association (AMGA) , and Medical Group Management have been wrestling with this issue of reporting on how APPs are utilized (ie for billable services under their provider number or for coverage assistance and all of the iterations in between). Always look forward to reviewing the survey data and have been excited to see greater amounts of data representing my fellow APPs.

Market factors affecting Anesthesia groups are outpacing survey data, especially given the 1+ year lag that is naturally present in survey collection. In addition, looking beyond the quartiles at the 25th, Median, 75th, and 90th will also shed light on the variability in facts and circumstances that impact value. No doubt hospitals are feeling this on a regular basis as they negotiate anesthesia PSAs. See article recently released by Becker's Healthcare. * Reimbursement down 8.2% from 2019 - 2024 * Anesthesia provider pool shrinking in the face of increasing demand * Impact from the No Surprise Act * Private Equity Interest in the space Be sure to consider the facts and circumstances surrounding your hospital-based arrangements. It is imperative to understand the interplay between the qualitative facts and the quantitative data to arriving at a credible FMV analysis. Share your comments or reach out to discuss more.

The health care industry is still parsing the effects of the Supreme Court’s recent decisions in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, which ends Chevron deference, and SEC v. Jarkesy, which entitles defendants to a jury trial when the government seeks civil penalties. Chip Hutzler, HMS Valuation Partners , speaks with Greg Demske, Goodwin Procter LLP, and Jonathan Porter, Husch Blackwell, about how these decisions will impact the health care industry. They discuss which health care regulations may come under closer scrutiny after Loper Bright and the kinds of health care civil penalties that may be affected under Jarkesy. Jonathan recently co-authored an article for Health Law Weekly about this topic. From AHLA’s Fraud and Abuse Practice Group. Sponsored by HMS Valuation Partners.
