24 August 2024 Igniting Innovation - Highlights from Our Inspiring SG Eco Fund Showcase Experience at Vidacity! We’re excited to share that Holocene recently participated in the SG Eco Fund grantee showcase at Vidacity! The event was a vibrant celebration of innovation, networking, and a shared commitment to making a positive impact. Building connections with like-minded SG Eco Fund grantees There was a palpable sense of camaraderie and buzz in the air as we engaged with fellow organizations, exchanged ideas, and celebrated each other’s collective progress. Learning how other grantees’ projects are tackling social and environment challenges, motivates and spurs us on to achieve even greater heights in our sustainability journey. Our CEO Ms Susan Teh, also shared with Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Manpower & Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment, Dr Koh Poh Koon on Holocene’s projects, celebrating our collaborative vision for a sustainable future. 24 July 2024 From Seed to Sprout, Mastering the Art of Germination: SG Eco Fund Workshop with Tiong Bahru SCEC Seed germination is not just about planting; it’s about nurturing life sustainably. Did you know? Seeds that sink when placed in water indicate that they are fresh. This was just one of the many insightful tips shared during our workshop covering the fundamental principles of seed germination – a topic of interest amongst the Tiong Bahru residents. Each seed, seemingly small, had the dormant potential waiting to burst forth when planted in the right conditions. Through the interactive hands-on demonstration, participants learned about the critical factors influencing germination: moisture, temperature, and sunlight. Fun fact: some vegetable seeds require you to make a small slit on them before a sprout is able to grow and burst forth! Appreciating the practical handles of community gardening, not only nurtures each individual participant’s growth as a gardener but also strengthens our community’s bond with sustainable practices. Holocene takes the stage to inspire others with our SG Eco Fund Project Holocene had the privilege to be invited by the Ministry of Sustainability and Environment (MSE) to speak at the SG Eco Fund Ideation Workshop, where our CEO, Ms Susan Teh, shared learnings and insights around our experience as a grant recipient in launching our inaugural community project at Kim Tian West and how SG Eco Fund grant has supported us through this process. It was truly encouraging to meet passionate like minded individuals eager to embark on their sustainability journeys and sharing their ideas for a greener future. The workshop was brimming with energy and activity and it was a pleasure to connect with fellow individuals, all eager to practice active green citizenry and launch impactful initiatives of their own. 29 May 2024 Building a Greener Future Together: SG Eco Fund Workshop with Tiong Bahru SCEC Our CEO Ms Susan Teh, together with our team, volunteers and participants at our food waste upcycling workshop. This marks the conclusion of our four-part workshop! Sowing the seeds of sustainable living Through repurposing food waste and cultivating the community garden together, Tiong Bahru residents have steadily warmed up to the idea of food waste upcycling and community gardening as a sustainable way of life. Despite the challenges of nurturing crops in unpredictable weather conditions, there was concerted effort from the residents, alongside our First Penguin Volunteers, to faithfully garden and grow the vegetables. Not only have the seedlings sprouted and are flourishing, lasting friendships and connections have also blossomed along the way with the residents, enriching our sense of community. Building a greener future together We are immensely grateful for the dedication and passion shown by our First Penguin Volunteers and the positive uptake to the programme. 19 May 2024 Transforming Trash into Treasure: Food Waste Education Workshop supported by SG Eco Fund “Should tea bags be considered recyclable food waste?” This was one of the many questions brought up during the workshop held on a vibrant Sunday afternoon. Residents of Kim Tian converged eagerly to gain a deeper understanding of food waste upcycling. “Treasure hunting” for recyclable food waste The workshop was an interactive learning session, where participants embarked on a “treasure hunt” to accurately identify the type of food waste that can be collected and upcycled in a composter. They were better able to appreciate the intricacies of various types of food waste (both raw and cooked), and how such waste can be upcycled to become precious “treasure” i.e. organic compost. By the end of the workshop, residents were able to confidently segregate food waste and appreciate what can or cannot be upcycled. Keen to discover food waste upcycling answers for yourself? 24 April 2024 Cultivating and Embracing Sustainable Lifestyle Habits: SG Eco Fund Workshop with Tiong Bahru SCEC From learning to actualization – residents are witnessing the fruits of their labour! No matter rain or shine over the past one month, the residents have been working tirelessly at Tiong Bahru Community Centre and Seng Poh Garden to take good care of the crops. It is encouraging to see how the residents have grown more comfortable in gardening, and they are aiming to give back the vegetables to the needy in the community once harvested! Moreover, participants have expressed interest to come alongside us and join our First Penguin Volunteerism movement to champion food waste upcycling and community gardening.
