My experience at University of Notre Dame - Mendoza College of Business has been nothing less than transformational. I was fortunate enough to participate in Frontlines in America and partner with Homeboy Industries. For those unaware of Homeboy Industries, it is the largest formerly incarcerated and gang-involved rehabilitation organization in the world. It provides individuals with a second chance at life, with the primary goal being to see them heal from trauma, allowing them to contribute fully to their family and community. This time in Los Angeles with Homeboy Industries was nothing short of a beacon of hope, inspiration, positivity, and determination. We never give up on people. Sustainability reporting is becoming more fashionable. The Textile Exchange released a 2024 Materials Benchmark Study leading up to this week's conference. 418 brands are now reporting on commitments to source sustainable materials. The conference ends with a tour of Homeboy Industries. This LA based non-profit helps previously incarcerated individuals re-enter the workforce.

This past week, our Frontlines in America team from the University of Notre Dame had the opportunity to visit Homeboy Industries. Our 12-week project was with Homeboy Threads, one of Homeboy Industries' social enterprises, building out their resale apparel e-commerce business. For those unaware of Homeboy Industries, it is the largest formerly incarcerated and gang-involved rehabilitation organization in the world. It provides individuals with a second chance at life, with the primary goal being to see them heal from trauma, allowing them to contribute fully to their family and community. There was so much hope, inspiration, and positivity from the homies to develop their skills and pursue their dreams in life. Entering through those doors was the first step to transforming their lives into something amazing. Homeboy Industries doesn’t give up on anyone and I encourage you to do the same. Thank you to Homeboy Industries and the Threads team for welcoming us with open arms and making us part of the family. This perspective challenges us to look beyond immediate individual impacts and consider the long-term institutional effects of our initiatives. As a proud graduate of the Stanford Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society (Stanford PACS) program in social entrepreneurship, I see myself as part of this transformative movement. Leaders like Father Greg Boyle of Homeboy Industries, Anthony Wright from Pioneer Human Services, and Vanessa Kirsch of New Profit exemplify how social enterprises can model fair alternatives and support just institutions. Organizations like Teach For America also address educational inequity by mobilizing recent graduates to teach in underserved communities, exemplifying a social enterprise model focused on systemic change and education justice. The article highlights the importance of measuring success by immediate outputs and long-term institutional impact. By embracing these ideas and learning from impactful leaders, we can better harness the transformative potential of social entrepreneurship to create a fairer and more just society. As social entrepreneurs, our goal should be to address societal issues so effectively that our services become unnecessary. This endeavor requires a dual focus on immediate solutions and long-term systemic change, aligning with the article’s emphasis on ensuring that social entrepreneurship's contributions are meaningful and sustainable.
