Last weekend our Co-founder Doug Tallamy and our ED, Brandon, met up to give a presentation in conjunction with the Rappahannock Environmental League and meet with stakeholders who will shape the future of conservation in Rappahannock. It was a sold out talk and went well, but the craziest thing was getting a photo of Doug smiling! #conservation #nativeplants #biodiversity

Simple, science-based, grassroots solution to regenerate biodiversity, one person at a time. Get on the HNP MAP!
About us
Welcome to Homegrown National Park®, a 501(c)(3) non-profit co-founded by Doug Tallamy and Michelle Alfandari. HNP is a grassroots call-to-action to regenerate biodiversity and ecosystem function because every human being on this planet needs diverse, highly productive ecosystems to survive. We are at a critical juncture where the continued loss of so many species from local ecosystems will increasingly compromise their ability to produce the ecosystem services, including oxygen, clean water, flood control, pollination, pest control, carbon storage, etc., that sustain our lives. Our mission is to catalyze anyone with access to some soil to start a new HABITAT® by planting native plants and removing most invasive plants. This includes everyone, from individual homeowners to property owners, land managers, farmers, and individuals with the space for just a single plant pot! Our initial goal in the US is 20 million acres of native plantings spanning yards, campuses, porches, and balconies. This represents approximately ½ of the area covered by US lawns on privately-owned property. To track this goal, we have created the HNP MAP. It provides an interactive, community-based visual that illustrates each contribution to planting native as we create new ecological networks and restore biodiversity together. Be a part of the largest and most inclusive cooperative conservation project ever conceived or attempted and GET ON THE MAP! “Our National Parks, no matter how grand in scale, are too small and separated from one another to preserve species to the levels needed. Thus, the concept for Homegrown National Park, a bottom-up call-to-action to restore habitat where we live and work, and to a lesser extent where we farm and graze, extending national parks to our yards and communities.” - Doug Tallamy

HNP proudly supports proposed legislation to promote native plants in federal projects! The proposal would require federal projects to prioritize using native plants in landscape planning. The Building Native Habitats at Federal Facilities Act was introduced with bipartisan support by Senators Martin Heinrich (D-NM) and Mike Braun (R-IN) and Representatives Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) and Dave Joyce (R-OH). "The importance of native plants in supporting biodiversity cannot be overstated,” said Doug Tallamy, Co-Founder of Homegrown National Park. “We are thrilled to see the federal government advance this legislation as it is both easy to implement and an essential step toward addressing the biodiversity crisis."

Give this powerful piece by Dr. Christienne Hinz a read! Dr. Hinz eloquently navigates the intersection of race with growing a native prairie in her front yard right in the heart of suburbia. "It made my heart hurt, really hurt, to think we have raised a generation of children so profoundly disconnected from a natural world in need of mending. I captured some fireflies in a mason jar so the kids could see what they look like up close. Their awed gazes and murmurs of appreciation were payment in full for the time, money, and physical and psychic labor I’ve spent seducing a backyard ecosystem’s revival." #esg #conservation #nativeplants #environmentalism #biodiversity https://lnkd.in/gA4py5yr
