Thank you to our CoC partners, @NSO - Detroit, COTS and Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries for hosting our Voter Registration Drive for People Experiencing Homelessness! We also extend our gratitude to Shelter Ambassadors Tawanna Simpson, Tiffany Gist, Allah Young, and Rachel Minion, along with Detroit Advisors Group (DAG) member Duran, for helping register and inform shelter residents about voting. Together, we’re empowering individuals to shape our communities at the ballot box. A special mention goes to Sruthi Talluri and Stephanie Smith from the City of Detroit's Health Department for collaborating with us to provide essential health information to residents.

We are the Lead Agency for the Detroit Continuum of Care, servicing the cities of Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park.
About us
The Continuum of Care (CoC) model was instituted by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in the 1990’s, as HUD recognized the need for a more coordinated, collaborative, and community-driven approach to awarding funds to organizations providing services to people who are experiencing homelessness. One of the responsibilities of the CoC is to collaboratively plan and apply for HUD McKinney-Vento funds. Since 1996, HAND has served as the lead entity for the Continuum of Care for the cities of Detroit, Hamtramck, and Highland Park, Michigan. We work with a wide range of organizations including service providers; community development organizations; and local, state, and federal government entities to find and implement solutions to homelessness in our community and to move forward our 10-Year Plan to End Homelessness. HAND manages annual funding applications to the State and Federal government, resulting in over $25 million in homelessness programming coming to our community on an annual basis. HAND is also a core resource for all things data related on homelessness. We oversee and manage our community’s Homeless Management Information System (HMIS), ensuring we have accurate information on who is homeless in our community, what their needs are, and what is working to address those needs. HAND is a resource in Detroit working for solutions to the problem of homelessness and advocating on behalf of those who are homeless. Through bi-monthly membership meetings, HAND serves as an on-going forum for sharing information, planning, and networking among all agencies.

The Human Cost of Burnout in Homeless Services: Exploring Trauma, Systemic Challenges, and the Path Forward I recently gave a presentation titled Returning the Humanity to Homeless Services, where I explored the personal and systemic challenges faced by workers in our field. We discussed the impact of personal trauma, secondary trauma, burnout, and compassion fatigue, along with systemic and organizational challenges like funding shortages, resource constraints, high demand, and lack of coordination among service providers. Since that session, I’ve been developing a research aim focused on understanding the prevalence of personal trauma and stress among homeless services workers, and how these, combined with secondary trauma and systemic and organizational challenges, contribute to burnout, PTSD, poor physical and mental health, and compassion fatigue. This research is especially important as we bring more individuals with lived experience into this field, recognizing both the unique perspectives they offer and the challenges they face. By addressing these issues, we can better support staff, improve well-being, and enhance service effectiveness. I’m curious if anyone is currently working on similar research. If so, I’d love to connect and learn more. If not, I’m looking to collaborate with established researchers or firms interested in pursuing this project, as I don’t have the time, resources, or experience to take it on alone. If you or someone you know might be interested, please reach out!

Advocacy Alert! MCAH has partnered with the Rent is Too Damn High Coalition to launch the Housing Homestretch 2024 Campaign. From now through December, we will be pushing the legislature to pass seven essential tenant protections and we need your help to bring these bills to the finish line! The legislature has introduced over sixty housing related bills this session, but has yet to pass any critical tenant protections that will change renters’ and unhoused folks’ lives for the better. We need all hands on deck to end this session strong and push these bills across the finish line in the Housing Homestretch. Support the campaign today in just a minute and sign on here to show your support: https://lnkd.in/g38W2rTm #ThePowerofOne
