About us
The mission of the Homeless Children’s Education Fund (HCEF) is to advance the education of children and youth experiencing homelessness in Southwestern PA, guiding them to be productive, empowered citizens. The Homeless Children's Education Fund (HCEF) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established in 1999 to support the educational needs of children experiencing homelessness in Allegheny County. Over the years, HCEF's role in the community has developed and expanded to meet these needs. HCEF relies on support from community foundations, corporations, and individuals and receives no governmental funding. HCEF helps homeless children and youth realize their potential through a number of innovative educational programs through partnerships with shelters, transitional housing facilities, and local schools, as well as through advocacy work at the local, state and national level. For more information on the many programs we offer, please visit our website at www.homelessfund.org.

Homelessness is more than just a lack of shelter—it disrupts education, mental health, and overall well-being. Over 1.1 million students in the U.S. face homelessness each year, with 3,496 right here in Allegheny County. Shockingly, only 13% of these students read at grade level, and just 11% are proficient in math. This isn’t just a housing issue—it’s an educational crisis. Join us in making a difference! Celebrate the YOU CAN Campaign at our Wrap Party on November 6th at 5 PM. 💙 RSVP here by clicking the link: https://lnkd.in/gC5QXMg7. Thank you to everyone who supported us throughout October!

🏈 As we gear up for Monday Night Football in da 'Burgh, here’s a huge shoutout to the Steelers Organization, Najee Harris, and Blayre Holmes Davis for making last Thursday’s HCEF Teen Night unforgettable! Najee held nothing back, sharing his powerful journey with a room filled with teens and their caregivers. From overcoming childhood homelessness to pursuing his Bachelor’s and a high GPA, he kept it real, answering every question straight from the heart. It was an incredibly raw, inspiring, and impactful night that our students will carry with them long after. A heartfelt thank you to Najee and Blayre for empowering our youth with hope and courage to rise above! ❤️ #YOUCAN

Children experiencing homelessness often face academic disruptions as they move between school districts while staying with friends or family. 🔢80% of U.S. high school students experiencing homelessness perform below grade level in math. 📚Nearly 70% of U.S. high school students experiencing homelessness perform below grade level in reading. 🎓Nearly 1 in 3 homeless students will not graduate on time. We do everything in our power to ensure the children in our programs don't become one of these statistics. That's why we partner with organizations like the Homeless Children's Education Fund that brings Winnie's Wagon to provide on-site tutoring and educational support. Together, we're building brighter futures!💙 #ChildhoodHomelessness #Education #Tutoring #Hope
