Today, on #WorldMentalHealthDay, we at Homeless Children’s Network reaffirm our commitment to advocating for mental health as a fundamental human right. For children and families experiencing homelessness, especially within marginalized communities, barriers to care can be immense—stigma, financial challenges, and lack of culturally competent services. Through programs like Ma’at and Entre Nosotros, we provide holistic, trauma-informed care rooted in cultural competence, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background or circumstances, can access the mental health support they need. Dr. April Y. Silas, CEO of Homeless Children's Network (HCN) since 1992, is a visionary leader who has dedicated her life to transforming the futures of homeless children, youth, and families. With over 40 years of experience working with low-income youth of color facing profound barriers—such as substance abuse and trauma—Dr. Silas has positioned HCN as a beacon of hope and healing for marginalized communities. Under her leadership, HCN has become a trailblazer in providing culturally grounded mental health services for Black/African American communities in San Francisco, with the pioneering Ma'at Program offering holistic, compassionate support to Black youth and families. Dr. Silas' leadership is defined by relationship-building, resilience, and a fierce dedication to breaking the cycles of poverty, racism, and violence that affect generations. Her lifelong mission is to uplift those disenfranchised and silenced by systemic oppression, guiding them toward healing and strength. Nationally recognized for her groundbreaking work, Dr. Silas is a tireless advocate for Black/African American, LGBTQIA+, and homeless communities. Appointed to the Mayor’s LGBTQI+ Advisory Committee for the San Francisco Human Rights Commission in 2021, her impact continues to grow. In 2022, the Ma’at Program was featured in a federal guide as a model for adapting evidence-based practices for under-resourced communities, further solidifying Dr. Silas’ role as a transformative force in the fight for equity and justice. #mentalhealth #HCN #HomelessChildrensnetwork #SFNonprofitsWork #SocialSafetyNet

https://lnkd.in/dkpAjz7W As September, Suicide Prevention Month, concludes, we at Homeless Children's Network (HCN) reaffirm our commitment to year-round mental health support for vulnerable children and families. The recent $68 million in grants from the Biden-Harris Administration underscores the urgency of this crisis. With culturally-responsive, trauma-informed care, HCN remains dedicated to saving lives through crisis intervention, therapy, and community empowerment. It’s crucial to learn the warning signs of suicide, such as changes in behavior or expressions of hopelessness, so we can intervene early and offer support. Let’s continue to raise awareness, support one another, and ensure that no one faces this struggle alone. #SuicidePrevention #MentalHealthMatters #HCNCares #988Lifeline #HCN #HomelessChildrensNetwork

This week we're honoring the members of our first Magic Cabinet cohorts — nine nonprofits serving diverse communities across the Bay Area — as they adjourn after five years together. We are incredibly grateful for the lessons learned, which have not only shaped our approach to grantmaking, but have helped us reimagine our role as a funder. As these first cohorts sunset, we're reflecting on the capacity-building projects that have helped shape our partners into forces for change, now and well into the future. Thank you for your partnership Homeless Children's Network, Old Skool Cafe, Open Door Legal , Asian Women's Shelter, La Cocina - Nonprofit Kitchen Incubator , First Graduate, East Oakland Boxing Association (EOBA), MISSSEY, Inc., and Planting Justice.
