There's no sugar coating this: We have a BIG problem facing us in the skilled trades. Actually, I'd probably characterize it as huge. We simply have more work than we do workers. The demand is far outweighing the supply of talent. And by and large, it's not specific to one town, state or region. The situation is prevalent nationwide. This is among the reasons we really have to dig in and start doing a better job at attracting younger generations - especially Gen Z - to pursue careers in the skilled trades. Our homes and residential infrastructure are depending on it. But how do we do it? How do we correct the misperceptions about being a plumber or electrician or HVAC installer? One thing we have to do is strike while the iron is hot. And I say that timing is right now. Some of Gen Z are starting to question the idea that college is for everyone. (Spoiler alert: It's not and it never has been.) They're questioning if there's a better way to spend their time and money when they're fresh out of high school. Make no mistake, there's still a place for a college education. We'll always need college graduates. But smartly, Gen Z-ers are realizing there are alternatives. For us - HomeServe and companies whose success relies on people in the skilled trades - we need to collectively do better at spreading the word about the possibilities of doing the work so many shy away from. I'm a Gen X-er. I went to college. I'm a CEO. And while I certainly have an appreciation for this issue, maybe there are some people who can speak on the matter just as well as I can: actual Gen Z-ers working in the trades. So, we checked in with some of our HVAC Techs who work at our Brooklyn-Queens depot in New York. They opened up about their career journeys, what drew them to the trades and why they're planning to stay put. Check out what they had to say and let me know what you think will draw Gen Z to the trades. #GenZ #College #SkilledTrades #Money #HVAC #HigherEducation #Plumbing #Electrical

We’re in homes every day, tuning up, repairing and installing HVAC systems. Generally, they have pretty long lifespans, which is good because heating and cooling systems are among the most expensive and important parts of our homes. Not only does your HVAC system keep your home at a comfortable temperature, it also influences air quality and consumes the most energy – roughly half overall – of any system or appliance in your home. Your HVAC system is the biggest driver behind your energy bill. Even with today’s more energy-efficient models, a recent survey by Clear Sears Research for ACHR News shows that most homeowners don’t want to replace them until they absolutely have to. More specifically, when they break and can’t be repaired. Usually, homeowners elect to repair their systems as long as that’s an option. But you have to wonder, is that the best decision? Can the benefits of a newer, more energy efficient system outweigh the costs of repairs or the inefficiencies an older system brings? As the ACHR News article says, “They might not realize the benefits of proactive replacement regarding energy efficiency, comfort, safety, and reduced maintenance costs.” And an energy-efficient HVAC system is a benefit to your home – these models can offer better and more consistent temperature control; reduce your energy usage, which lowers both your energy bill and your environmental impact; and there are many tax credits and rebates to be had, which means that there has never been a better time to invest in your home's HVAC system. These benefits are why we offer Advantage, which takes care of every aspect of a new, energy-efficient HVAC system, from financing to install to maintenance and repairs, all for an easily budgeted monthly fee. It couldn't be easier for homeowners – after the unit is installed, our technicians will return for regular maintenance at no additional charge. And if something breaks, we repair it, or, if it can't be repaired, we replace the unit, once again, at no additional charge to the homeowner. Waiting until your HVAC system has given up the ghost means that your home could be uncomfortably hot or dangerously cold until you're able to have it replaced. Installing a new system will cost an average of $10,000 , but it’s dependent on where you live and the size of your house, and usually can be done in one day.   Planning ahead and scheduling a replacement before a total breakdown will prevent a host of inconveniences and lessen the shock to your wallet. #HVAC #homeownership #money #energyefficiency https://lnkd.in/eKXHU9fJ
