As Hispanic Heritage month comes to a close, we highlight attorney Elizabeth Serrano on the significance of this month and how it has shaped her within her legal profession. “Hispanic Heritage Month is deeply meaningful to me as a first-generation Mexican American attorney. This month offers a chance to reflect on the cultural heritage and traditions that have shaped my identity. It also reminds me of the sacrifices my parents made to create opportunities for future generations, which continues to inspire my journey. From a young age, my parents emphasized the importance of family, hard work, respect, and dedication. Our holiday celebrations and family traditions have always reinforced my connection to my roots. As a Latina, I cherish my background, as it enriches my perspective and enhances the work I do in my legal career. I find immense inspiration in Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the first Latina Supreme Court Justice. Her journey embodies resilience and determination, and her commitment to justice and equality resonates with many of us facing similar challenges in the legal profession. She motivates me to strive for excellence while advocating for diversity. Looking forward, I hope to see the legal profession continue to prioritize diversity and inclusion, leading to greater representation that reflects our society. With only roughly 5% of attorneys in the U.S. being Hispanic, it’s crucial that we make progress. As a Latina attorney, I understand the unique hurdles our community faces in pursuing legal careers, and I am committed to mentoring and encouraging other Latinos along their paths. I want to help ensure that Hispanics know they belong in the legal field and can make a significant impact.” #Diversity #Advocacy #HispanicHeritageMonth
