An HonorHealth Research Institute patient, the first in Arizona successfully treated for her extensive melanoma cancer outside a clinical trial with a new kind of immunotherapy, and her doctor, were featured on nationwide television this week during an episode of Inside Edition.    Tena Hughes, 54, a lifelong Phoenix resident, was about to board a plane for Uganda to fulfill a once-in-a-lifetime dream of seeing critically endangered mountain gorillas in the wilds of Africa. However, what at the time was a mandatory COVID test came back positive, and she was forced to stay home. She didn’t know it at the time, but she would later attribute that test to saving her life.    Weeks later, Tena began suffering excruciating headaches. An exam in February 2021 showed she had several late-stage melanoma tumors that had spread from an unknown origin to her brain. Subsequent scans would show the cancer had also spread to her spleen and left lung.    Justin Moser MD, a melanoma specialist conducting clinical trials at the Research Institute, said a new immunotherapy called TIL (tumor infiltrating lymphocytes) is providing Tena with a durable response to her cancer, which began clearing within days of her treatment.    For more information about HonorHealth Research Institute cancer clinical trials, contact: 480-323-1350. Last Monday, July 29, our incredible Research Program Managers at the HonorHealth Research Institute volunteered at the Desert Mission Food Bank! They dedicated their time and effort to break down and organize numerous pallets of food and package bins for those in need within our community. We are immensely proud of our team for their commitment to making a positive impact both in and out of the Research Institute.

A programing algorithm being tested by HonorHealth Research Institute for those patients with new or recently installed pacemakers is designed so the device not only provides a steady heartbeat but also controls high blood pressure. A recently opened clinical trial called BACKBEAT (BradycArdia paCemaKer for Blood prEssure treAtmenT) aims to use pacemakers to not only treat slow heart rates but also to deliver timed electrical pulses, using a special programable algorithm to coordinate the heart’s upper and lower chambers in a way that reduces the patient’s blood pressure. The clinical trial is for patients who require a pacemaker, but who no longer respond well to their current high blood pressure medication. Reducing high blood pressure lowers the risk of life-threatening strokes, heart attacks and cardiovascular diseases. “It’s a huge, huge health problem,” said Rahul Doshi, M.D., an electrophysiologist in the Research Institute’s Cardiovascular Research Division. “Many patients who require a pacemaker have uncontrolled high blood pressure.” Dr. Doshi described this new technique on the Phoenix-area PBS public affairs program, Arizona Horizon.
