Teens and young adults — especially Black, Brown, and Queer young people — bring their own unique lived experiences to social media spaces and, as a result, have different experiences with the content and communities they find there. The new National Survey developed by Hopelab and Common Sense Media highlights that while social media continues to pose risks, it also plays a beneficial role in supporting the mental health and well-being of young people, especially those from marginalized communities. Hear from young people at #BHT2024 involved in the research and youth mental health advocates as they discuss the nuanced relationship young people have with social media, AI, and digital mental health tools. Learn about how Hopelab and Common Sense Media prioritized youth co-creation to develop the National Survey and the importance of creating policies at the federal and state levels that are developed together with young people using evidence that highlights their lived experience on these platforms. See you there on November 6th at 3:15pm. Register now: https://hubs.li/Q02W4Q4Q0

🛣  The first stop on our team’s HBCU campus tour was Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia! Our team members Julie Tinker, Samira Pingali, Robin Hayashi, and Jayla Stokesberry visited 2024 Hopelab HBCU Translational Science Fellow Natalie Watson-Singleton, PhD. 🤝 Natalie Watson-Singleton, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist and Associate Professor of Psychology. She plans to extend a mindfulness stress-reduction app for Black Americans by creating new content specifically designed to meet the needs of Black young people. ❤️ Favorite item in her office: “I just love this picture of my mother. It reminds me of the lineage of women I come from and how my life is an extension of their hopes and dreams.” 🏫 Favorite spot on campus: “I think this [Alumnae Arch] is my favorite place on campus because of the history and meaning. Tradition states that students can only walk under the Alumnae Arch at Spelman College once they graduate. Students who walk through the arch at graduation are cheered on by a long line of past graduates. Dr. Watson-Singleton mentioned how inspiring it is to see alums of all ages - from recent to elderly - dedicate hours of cheering to ensure every single graduate is celebrated. ✨ Advice for folks thinking about attending/joining HBCUs: “Do it! Committing to an HBCU gives you a unique opportunity to be in a place that actively affirms your humanity, worthiness, and brilliance.” 💡 Learn more about our inaugural cohort of HBCU researchers who are translating science into practice to improve Black youth mental health: https://lnkd.in/gAk9TM-B #HBCU
