Program Director, Value Management at HSS

I had the privilege of attending #ICHOM2024 in Amsterdam with my Hospital for Special Surgery colleagues, Catherine MacLean, MD PhD and Amy Chin. We were selected to display our poster, "Cost, Utilization, and Outcomes for Revision Total Hip and Knee Arthroplasty by Pre-Operative Indication," in the Abstract Gallery, for a global audience of healthcare leaders to view in person. The conference fostered rich discussions on advancing healthcare through patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), with a focus on their role in revolutionizing care, payment models, and policy. A key session was the World Economic Forum's roundtable on transforming healthcare through value-based models, where global leaders explored public-private partnerships, financing for value, VBHC change models, and leveraging digital and data utility. Engaging with leaders from around the world to address these questions was invaluable. Another great session, "PROMs: How to Walk the Talk," was a collaborative workshop where we explored strategies for harmonizing PROMs, improving selection and prioritization, and enhancing data visualization and sharing to support shared decision-making. I am eager to bring these insights back to HSS to continue shaping high-value, patient-centered care! #ICHOM2024 #ValuebasedHealthcare #PatientCenteredOutcomes #PROMs International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM)

  • In a study conducted at HSS, researchers found that patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) who used continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy before total hip and knee replacement surgery significantly reduced their risk for complications after surgery compared with OSA patients who did not use CPAP therapy before surgery. These findings were presented at the Society of Anesthesia and Sleep Medicine SASM HQ 14th annual meeting. “Obstructive sleep apnea affects 40 million adults in the United States and is associated with an increased complication risk among patients undergoing surgery,” said Stavros Memtsoudis, MD, PhD, Anesthesiologist-in-Chief and Chair of the HSS Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care & Pain Management. “These findings are significant as they support the notion that adhering to these guidelines can benefit OSA patients undergoing surgery,” said Jashvant Poeran, MD, PhD, Director of Research in the HSS Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care & Pain Management. “While we had anticipated these results based on the guidelines, this is the first study to demonstrate this on such a large scale.” https://brnw.ch/21wNTW4

  • In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, the Hispanic Organization for Leadership & Advancement (HOLA) ERG at HSS led incredible events that showcased the richness of Hispanic/Latinx culture and contributions. The kick-off was Café con HOLA, a series in which Hispanic/Latinx leaders within HSS shared their insights on professional development & leadership. Additionally, the United for Health Equity: Addressing Disparities with the Hispanic Federation program highlighted the importance of addressing health disparities in our communities by sharing strategies to improve access to care, raise awareness, and promote culturally competent healthcare practices. Lastly, the Noche de Estrellas Talent Show included powerful poetry readings, song, and dance performances from HSS employees and community-based Dominican and Ecuadorian folklore groups. This was a beautiful celebration of culture and talent across our community.  These events provided meaningful opportunities to connect in real time and honor the diversity that enriches our organization. Throughout the rest of the month’s festivities, stunning wall displays were made across HSS locations that honored influential Hispanic figures and their contributions. Thank you to everyone who joined in these memorable celebrations!

  • SciRhom, a biotech startup co-founded by HSS, recently secured $70 million Series A financing round to support the clinical development of its novel drug candidate, SR-878. This news follows the company’s recently received approval from Austrian regulatory authorities (BASG/AGES) required to commence its first-in-human Phase I clinical trial in Europe this fall. SR-878, which builds upon foundational basic research discoveries made in the lab of Carl P. Blobel, MD, PhD, director of the Arthritis and Tissue Degeneration Program at the HSS Research Institute, is a monoclonal antibody drug candidate that targets inflammation in a new way. The development of SR-878 underscores the importance of doing basic science research at academic institutions like HSS,” says Michael P. Ast, MD, orthopedic surgeon and Chief Medical Innovation Officer at HSS. “SciRhom’s recent Series A financing and its approval to start clinical trials are pivotal milestones in the company’s journey towards commercialization” says Vijay Nair, Managing Director at the HSS Innovation Institute. https://lnkd.in/eu4BqCzs
