📣 Just dropped: new report on housing and school segregation in the Richmond region. We collaborated with University of Richmond, VCU School of Education, HousingForward Virginia, The Commonwealth Institute for Fiscal Analysis, RVA Eviction Lab, Partnership for Housing Affordability, and the VCU Research Institute for Social Equity to update a major report. Segregation isn’t natural or inevitable. It’s a failure of policy. And that means we can change it. The report contains pages of policy recommendations — reasons for hope — that we can push our leaders to embrace. Learn more about the report: https://lnkd.in/etmBCCbt Join us tonight for a symposium at the University of Richmond with all the partners: https://lnkd.in/euU6CCiW #endsegregationnow #fairhousing #equalopportunity

We're busy ensuring equal access to housing for all people. We're talking about it, too. 📣 ICYMI, over the last few months, we've shaped news about housing challenges — making sure to point the conversation toward #fairhousing, our ongoing work to end discrimination in the housing market. Check out these articles: "Overcharged, then evicted: How errors push out public housing residents" Our advocacy team worked behind-the-scenes to break down data on hundreds of public housing residents summoned to court for eviction filings over incorrect rent charges. https://lnkd.in/efEz6iHx "Habitat for Humanity will buy Carlton Mobile Home Park" This encouraging news bucks a trend, as two members of our team explained. "What we see a lot is private equity buying up these parks and just trying to suck the value out of them,” our Deputy Director of Advocacy, Brenda Castañeda, noted. https://lnkd.in/eRB5yfbq "Home values skyrocketing in RVA? Not if you're Black" Our latest report — revealing racial bias in appraisals and widespread displacement of Black residents — garnered many headlines, and it continues to come up in discussions of how the City of Richmond can do more to make housing fair. https://lnkd.in/dSMpHhXw

Here’s a look at how HOME helps: When retiree Linda got behind on her mortgage, our foreclosure prevention expert Sha'ri Williams jumped into action. “It felt personal with her,” Linda told us. Today, Linda remains in her home, with a new monthly payment she can afford. And we’re happy to celebrate Sha’ri — one member of our amazing HOME team! "Every week at the John Marshall Courthouse in downtown Richmond, the story is the same: case after case of eviction filings come before a judge, and families’ lives are turned upside down." So begins the new essay by our Director of Policy, recently published by our friends at HousingForward Virginia. Check it out — and learn about a policy failure with a ready fix: https://lnkd.in/eKrr4hsw. #fairhousing

Do you know how much credit reports get in the way of #FairHousing? In our new 60-second video, see how unfair access to credit blocks huge numbers of individuals and families from the housing they choose. Landlords use credit reports in tenant screening. But these checks leave out all sorts of relevant information. Do you always pay your utility bills on time? Never miss a rent payment? Well, that good financial management isn't reflected in your credit score. And even a cold economic calculation winds up short. Earlier this year, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development released a report concluding: "HUD is unaware of any studies showing that credit reports and scores accurately predict a successful tenancy." https://lnkd.in/dJxrhhX3 The one thing credit reports reliably do? Disproportionately exclude renters of color. Learn about that and more, in our online exhibit: https://lnkd.in/ezkumdme
