Just dropped — there's a new op-ed in The Virginia Mercury from our executive director, Thomas Okuda Fitzpatrick, on why housing needs your vote ☑️ this election season! From the length of your commute to the balance of your bank account and the schools your kids attend, housing costs get in the way of giving many of us a fair chance to build the lives we imagine. "What does this have to do with November’s elections?" Tom asks. "The problems we face are failures of policy. And that means we can change them." https://lnkd.in/exFp4END #fairhousing #vote #votevotevote

📣 Just dropped: new report on housing and school segregation in the Richmond region. We collaborated with University of Richmond, VCU School of Education, HousingForward Virginia, The Commonwealth Institute for Fiscal Analysis, RVA Eviction Lab, Partnership for Housing Affordability, and the VCU Research Institute for Social Equity to update a major report. Segregation isn’t natural or inevitable. It’s a failure of policy. And that means we can change it. The report contains pages of policy recommendations — reasons for hope — that we can push our leaders to embrace. Learn more about the report: https://lnkd.in/etmBCCbt Join us tonight for a symposium at the University of Richmond with all the partners: https://lnkd.in/euU6CCiW #endsegregationnow #fairhousing #equalopportunity

We're busy ensuring equal access to housing for all people. We're talking about it, too. 📣 ICYMI, over the last few months, we've shaped news about housing challenges — making sure to point the conversation toward #fairhousing, our ongoing work to end discrimination in the housing market. Check out these articles: "Overcharged, then evicted: How errors push out public housing residents" Our advocacy team worked behind-the-scenes to break down data on hundreds of public housing residents summoned to court for eviction filings over incorrect rent charges. https://lnkd.in/efEz6iHx "Habitat for Humanity will buy Carlton Mobile Home Park" This encouraging news bucks a trend, as two members of our team explained. "What we see a lot is private equity buying up these parks and just trying to suck the value out of them,” our Deputy Director of Advocacy, Brenda Castañeda, noted. https://lnkd.in/eRB5yfbq "Home values skyrocketing in RVA? Not if you're Black" Our latest report — revealing racial bias in appraisals and widespread displacement of Black residents — garnered many headlines, and it continues to come up in discussions of how the City of Richmond can do more to make housing fair. https://lnkd.in/dSMpHhXw
