Building a Legacy of Equity
About us
Complete Communities is an initiative of the City of Houston focused on bridging the gap between equity and opportunity. Made up of 10 historically under-resourced neighborhoods which together are home to one in six Houstonians, Complete Communities exists to ensure all residents can achieve success without barriers to opportunity. Every Houstonian should know their neighborhood matters. Our mission is to build one complete city from recovery to resilience by championing the voices of residents that have been ignored for far too long and offering every Houston resident the foundational resources needed to thrive. We work across private, public, and nonprofit sectors to collectively overcome economic, environmental, and equity challenges to transform Houston’s legacy into one everyone can be proud of.

The 2nd annual Dîner en Noir était très magnifique. 🤌🏾 Acres Homes Super Neighborhood Council #6 transforms its October monthly meeting into a shared meal to promote healthy eating while handling the community’s business. What started as Brunch en Blanc on a Saturday afternoon evolved into a dinner that deepens and expands neighborhood connections. Congratulations to SN#6 President LaTisha Grant on having the vision and making it a reality again and again for your community. If you want to get involved, SN#6 meets on the third Thursdays of every month at the Acres Homes Multi-Service Center. #AcresHomes #The44 #DinerEnNoir

Congratulations to the residents of the Cuney Homes and historic Third Ward on being awarded a $50 MILLION Choice Neighborhoods Implementation Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The Houston Housing Authority partnered with the City of Houston to submit in December 2023 the successful grant application. Asst. HUD Secretary Julia Gordon praised the Houston partnership for identifying an additional $650 million in public funds to leverage the $50 million HUD grant that is a catalyst for the revitalization and expansion of Houston’s oldest public housing community. The check presentation celebration at the Cuney Homes was a major milestone in this years-long journey of planning, community engagement, and financial investments into a brighter future for one of our city’s most under-resourced and under-served communities. And it marks the beginning of many years of intentional and transformational work to bring more affordable housing to the historic Third Ward. #WeRiseForOurFuture #CuneyHomes #HistoricThirdWard #DistrictD #CityofHouston

Congratulations to the Houston Housing Authority and City of Houston on being named a FY23/24 Choice Neighborhoods Implementation Grants Competition Finalist! Out of a pool of 28 applicants, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development selected nine finalists. HUD anticipates announcing this summer six grant awards of up to $50 million for each proposed project. The Choice Neighborhoods Initiative awards competitive grants to redevelop severely distressed HUD housing, catalyze investments in surrounding neighborhoods, and improve the lives of residents in underserved and underresourced communities. HHA, the City, and our partner organizations will continue to work together to increase Houston’s chances of securing one of the six grants.

Thank you, JPMorgan Chase & Co., Houston Community College, Dorian Cockrell, MPA, Michael Webster and the entire Houston #ResiliencyWorkforceCollaborative for your commitment to the outstanding collective work to make Houston stronger and more resilient.
As part of the JPMC-funded, #ResiliencyWorkforceCollaborative, I met with Jamie Dimon yesterday in #SecondWard at the East End Maker Hub to talk about JPMorgan Chase & Co.’s strategic investments in Houston’s future. Jamie’s enthusiasm for our collective’s work to provide Houstonians with opportunities and training in high-demand, green jobs industries energized all of us. Thank you, Dorian Cockrell, MPA, for setting the table for this cross-sector collaborative to grow to 38 public, private, and nonprofit partners. Since day one, I’ve proudly represented the City of Houston at that table. Ultimately, the work is to help Houstonians overcome future shocks - from hurricanes and flooding to extreme heat waves - and chronic stresses, such as aging infrastructure, poverty, and climate change. From providing the federal funds used to build the East End Maker Hub to developing with Houston Community College and Lone Star College a solar installer certification program, the City of Houston is doing that work. #houstonrwc #resilienthouston #houstoncompletecommunities

The Kinsey African American Art History Collection is at the Holocaust Museum Houston now until Juneteenth weekend. See it soon! Bernard and Shirley Kinsey and their adult son Khalil Kinsey have acquired and curated one of the world’s largest collections of art and artifacts that celebrates the history, achievements, and creativity of Black Americans and offers additional context to the American history we think we know. As a proud member of the Holocaust Museum Houston Advisory Board and the Kinsey Committee led by Eileen Lawal and Dr. Mia Knight Wright that helped to plan the show, I invite everyone to go see the Kinsey Collection at HMH.
