Last week, the Department of Education announced further delays in transmitting FAFSA data to colleges, which will result in delayed financial aid awards. What can families do to prepare for the weirdest college admissions year? - Talk budget with your student. What do financial aid awards need to look like in order for them to accept? - Apply for outside scholarships. - Review the colleges you applied to to make sure you have some affordable-no-matter-what choices. If not, many schools have extended application deadlines. - Review your family's financial situation. If anything has changed since 2022, you're probably a candidate for a financial aid appeal. Plenty has been written about the tax benefits of 529s: tax-free growth and distributions, state tax benefits for contributions in many states.
