  • We are excited about the Grand Re-Opening of the restored new home to Howard University School of Education and the Howard University Middle School, the Historic Myrtilla Miner Building. As we celebrate and continue the dynamic educational legacy of determination to change the future and provide access to education, we will have a panel of distinguished educators and alumni who will reflect on their journey as change agents. Learn more about our panelists below: Dr. Charles J. Gibbs is the President of Metropolitan College of New York (MCNY). With a distinguished 25-year career in higher education, Dr. Gibbs has led numerous institutions to growth and success. Dr. Gibbs is a triple alumnus of Howard University; An Ed.D. (Doctorate in Education) in 2020, M.Ed., Education Administration and Policy in 2004 and Bachelor of Business Administration, Marketing in 1991.   Dr. Amanda Alexander currently serves as the Chief Academic Officer at Scholastic. Amanda brings to Scholastic more than 20 years of progressive leadership experience in the field of education. Amanda has a B.A. in English and a M.Ed. in curriculum and instruction from Howard University, a M.S.Ed. in educational leadership from Baruch College, and a Ph.D. in education from American University.    Mrs. Keisha D. Redd-Hannans serves as the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment for New Haven Public Schools (NHPS). During her 24-year career as an educator she has demonstrated the ability to improve student learning, teacher quality and parental involvement. Keisha earned her Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees from Howard University. She completed the Administrator’s Certificate program at Sacred Heart University, the Executive Leadership Program at the University of Connecticut (UCONN) and is currently a doctoral student in the Education Leadership Program at UCONN.   Dr. Otis Williams, III is the Chair and an Associate Professor in the Department of Counseling and Psychological Studies at Bowie State University. He is also a licensed therapist in the state of Maryland.  He holds a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Howard University (Class of 2007). Dr. Williams has received several prestigious awards, including the 2024 "Excellence in Mentoring Award" from the University System of Maryland Board of Regents and the 2024 "Outstanding Mentor Award" from the Maryland Association of Counselor Education and Supervision.   • The School of Education is excited to invite you to a special event during this year’s centennial homecoming celebration. On October 17, 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM, the Myrtilla Miner Building will host its Grand Reopening!   Established in 1913, Miner Teachers College served as an educational stronghold for Black teachers and students in a time where access to education for Black individuals was limited. Now the Miner Building has been beautifully restored to house the Howard University School of Education and the Howard University Middle School. Maintaining its educational legacy and purpose, this building stands as a reminder of how perseverance, determination, and strength can change the future and provide access to education. The Miner Building is a testament to the progress we’ve made as a University, and as a country. As we continue to strive for academic excellence, the Miner Building will continue to serve as a beacon for generations of educators to create lasting change.   Event Details: Date: 10/17/2024 Time: 4-6 PM Location: 2400 6th Street NW, Washington, DC 20059 * Please note, the Miner Building is accessible on 6th Street right next to the        Administration Building.
