We promise to treat wastewater and recover natural resources to protect public health and the environment.
About us
Welcome. Since HRSD's inception, there has been one overriding mission -- to protect public health and the waters of Hampton Roads by treating wastewater effectively. HRSD returns treated effluent to nature in a way that will continue to nurture our water's delicate ecosystems. HRSD's workforce of scientists, engineers, water quality professionals and other staff know they must be sensitive to the needs of people and also be sensitive to the plants and animals who rely on our ability to protect their habitats. Our Promise: We promise to treat wastewater and recover natural resources to protect public health and the environment. Our Vision: Our communities will have clean waterways and reliable water resources for generations to come.

Here's a sneak peek at what is happening over in Newport News! HRSD is constructing the first SWIFT Facility at the James River Treatment Plant to produce SWIFT Water® that meets drinking water standards and is suitable for recharging the Potomac Aquifer. At this site, we plan to recharge the aquifer with up to 16 million gallons a day of SWIFT Water®. This Program will help reverse declining groundwater levels, significantly reduce the amount of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus entering the Chesapeake Bay, and may reduce saltwater intrusion and land subsidence, thereby helping to ensure HRSD’s ability to protect public health and the environment in alignment with HRSD’s Mission and Promise. 🔗https://ow.ly/kcnZ50SByqK

Thanks to the resilience and hard work of marine crews in Newport News, Virginia, Garney and the James River Crossing (JRX) team set a world record for the longest pullback of 42-inch DR-11 pipe. For roughly 24 hours, crews pulled 5,700 feet of pipe under the Newport News shipping channel using a pipe pusher. This new technology allowed the team to overcome pull forces and help assist the million-pound drill rig that was stationary on land. Watch this video to see how the crew completed this record-breaking operation!
