Thanks to the resilience and hard work of marine crews in Newport News, Virginia, Garney and the James River Crossing (JRX) team set a world record for the longest pullback of 42-inch DR-11 pipe. For roughly 24 hours, crews pulled 5,700 feet of pipe under the Newport News shipping channel using a pipe pusher. This new technology allowed the team to overcome pull forces and help assist the million-pound drill rig that was stationary on land. Watch this video to see how the crew completed this record-breaking operation!

The James River Watch Progam is monitoring the water quality of the James River! They're not only tracking where bacteria is coming from, but also doing testing with HRSD. "The James once was considered one of the most polluted rivers in the country, and swimming and fishing there was severely limited. Today, following years of tougher regulations and cleanup efforts, the James River Watch program works to ensure the public has access to information about the water bacteria levels." - The Virginian Pilot 🔗https://ow.ly/Pgec50SpVsl

Today is American Eagle Day🦅! The Chesapeake Bay supports three populations of bald eagles! As an estuary, the Bay is a mix of freshwater and saltwater 🌊, meaning it has various fish species for bald eagles to enjoy. The James River is a hotspot for bald eagles because of their forested shorelines. Decreasing the amount of pollution in the Chesapeake Bay helps to protect Bald Eagles. This includes not illegally discharging into waterways and safely disposing of medicines 💊instead of flushing them down the toilet.

Feature Friday: environmental stewardship through gardening! 🌻940 native perennials were recently installed near the Atlantic Treatment Plant! Perennials live for several years through a process of flowering and dying back. 🌞Benefits of perennials include less annual maintenance, a deeper root system, and a home to pollinators. 🌺 Native plants are also more adapted to local environmental conditions and help to reduce erosion. The garden is located in the large field across from the Atlantic Treatment Plant and is available for the public to view and enjoy!
