About us

Welcome. Since HRSD's inception, there has been one overriding mission -- to protect public health and the waters of Hampton Roads by treating wastewater effectively. HRSD returns treated effluent to nature in a way that will continue to nurture our water's delicate ecosystems. HRSD's workforce of scientists, engineers, water quality professionals and other staff know they must be sensitive to the needs of people and also be sensitive to the plants and animals who rely on our ability to protect their habitats. Our Promise: We promise to treat wastewater and recover natural resources to protect public health and the environment. 🌊💧 We had an incredible time celebrating The Value of Water's 10th annual #ImagineADayWithoutWater in collaboration with Hampton City Schools and Aberdeen Elementary School! Thanks to Betsy McAllister and Pam Henifin for helping to coordinate this incredible event. Our Community Educators along with Tim Moore from HDR welcomed 88 enthusiastic 3rd graders to the SWIFT Research Center. Over two exciting days, students dove into the water cycle, wastewater treatment, the Chesapeake Bay, and the impact of SWIFT on the Potomac Aquifer in Hampton Roads. They engineered their own water filters, sampled SWIFT water, and shared their thoughts on why water is so valuable. We are truly inspired by the curiosity and passion these students showed for our most precious resource. Here’s to nurturing the next generation of water stewards! 💦✨

🎉✨ Feature Friday: HRSD in Action for United Way Day of Caring! HRSD volunteers recently participated in Day of Caring in Portsmouth and Newport News. This annual event is all about businesses across Hampton Roads volunteering to give back to our incredible community. In Portsmouth, volunteers tackled a litter cleanup and spruced up the landscaping at the Up Center, creating a welcoming space for all! Meanwhile, in Newport News, our team built shelves and sorted vital clothing and hygiene supplies, ensuring families are ready for the winter season. We’re proud to be part of such impactful initiatives! It’s all about coming together and making a positive impact.
